The East African Wild Life Society (EAWLS) is a membership-based NGO that seeks to hire a Head of Programmes.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and attributes

  • A degree in Natural Resource Management (NRM) or related field, preferably at Masters level. (Experience/qualification as an environmental research scientist will be an added advantage).
  • Over 7 years’ professional experience in NRM / Conservation and at least five years in supervisory level, with demonstrated success in managing multi-disciplinary teams
    Proven track record in NGO fundraising and successfully developing, leading and managing programs in the field of environmental conservation.
  • Experience in working with the private sector, donors, non-governmental organizations,community-based organizations, as well as public sector;
  • Knowledge of and experience with monitoring and evaluation of programmes/projects
  • Knowledge in local and national NRM and environment matters, Proven advocacy and negotiation skills
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Demonstration of diligence in proposal and report writing
  • Good public relations and communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills in various computer packages (Ms. Word, Excel and power point);

    Job Specification

    The East African Wild Life Society (EAWLS) is a membership-based NGO that seeks to enhance the conservation and wise use of the environment and natural resources in East Africa for the benefit of current and future generations.

    We are seeking an energetic, innovative and visionary new senior team member who will assist in building upon our more than 60 years of experience and leadership in the conservation sector, by enhancing our impacting on environmental matters in target regions of East Africa.

    Reporting to the Executive Director, the Head of Programmes (HoP) will provide leadership and strategic vision to the EAWLS Programmes department.

    He/She will work closely with a five-member senior management team, led by the Executive Director, to build,
    lead and manage an effective and innovative Programmes team.

    Main Responsibilities:

    a) Programme Management – Provide leadership and management support to the programmes and projects teams, including leading on development and implementation of annual Programme Planning & budgeting and timely delivery of quality projects.
    b) Coordinate the implementation of all technical projects by working closely with programme and project managers to develop new projects/research and ensure successful delivery of existing projects.
    c) Ensure awareness of and full compliance with EAWLS, donor and government requirements and timely preparation and submission of quality proposals, narrative and financial reports.
    d) Oversee the monitoring and evaluation of EAWLS programmes/projects and the coordination of timely writing, approval and submission of regular programme reports to partners, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements and analysis to facilitate continuous improvement.
    e) Ensures strategic engagement with both local and international stakeholders on conservation issues, including strong engagement on policy and advocacy.
    f) Work closely with the Executive Director and the Head of Communications, Fundraising and Advocacy to mobilise resources and grants management by developing and maintaining a diversified, robust and stable funding portfolio required to implement the EAWLS strategy and maintaining good donor relations.
    g) Work closely with the Head of Communications, Fundraising and Advocacy to provide evidence-based content for environmental advocacy and EAWLS publications and stakeholder engagement.
    h) As the direct line manager for programmes team, develop and review individual work plans, manage performance, coach and advice on required training for your team to ensure competence, efficiency and motivation for the delivery of performance objectives as well as implementation of internal policies and procedures of the programme unit.
    i) Provide support in the preparation of organizational events for environmental campaigns.
    j) Any other duties as may be required by the Executive Director
