About EAVCA

  • The East Africa Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (EAVCA) is the trade association for private capital providers, including private equity and venture capital firms, investing in East Africa. Established in 2013, the firm has grown in its membership to represent over 90 companies that operate in the private capital ecosystem, across five East African markets: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Ethiopia. Cumulatively, EAVCA members have over US$3 billion in assets under management which they seek to invest in a range of sectors such as: agriculture, education, healthcare, consumables, manufacturing, infrastructure, and others.

  • At the core of what the association does is the advancement and promotion of East Africa as a private capital destination, while ensuring a favorable environment for trade for the start-up and SME sector.

    Uganda Chapter

  • EAVCA is looking to launch its chapter in Uganda given the growing number of active providers of long-term risk capital to Small and Medium-sized businesses and the need to further collaborate and grow the overall sector in the country.

    Mission:

  • Promote Uganda as a private capital destination, while ensuring a favorable environment for trade and investment in the local Ugandan private business sector.

    Scope of Activities:

  • EAVCA’s framework for action leans on its four pillars to catalysing and enabling the private capital market:

  • Advocacy

  • Intelligence

  • Training, and

  • Networking & Events

    Advocacy

  • Collective voice of the private capital industry with the public stakeholders, championing the cause of the sector with government in Uganda, regulators, other industry associations and the capital markets operators- who include pension funds, asset managers and fund administrators.

    Some of the areas to be addressed are:

  • Mergers and Competition rules

  • Pension fund allocation to private equity

  • Taxation, incentives and exemptions

  • Regulation on investments

    Training

  • Our training mandate involves capacity building of the professionals in the industry, by organizing trainings relevant to private capital investment.

  • We ensure our trainings are led by (local) experts who can share their expertise and local case studies for relevant sessions.

  • The Uganda Chapter will also engage in the capacity building of external stakeholders including pension funds and enterprises (SMEs), to ensure they have an understanding of how private capital investment works.

    Networking

  • Uganda Chapter is a platform that promotes private equity and venture capital interests in Uganda and the wider East Africa region.

  • Our role as a network facilitator allows us to create opportunities for our members to interact with governments, regulators, private enterprises and other stakeholders, to form synergies that are mutually beneficial.

  • Our events further allow us to grow awareness of our sector with other stakeholders, along with the contribution of private capital in positioning Uganda as an investment hub within East Africa.

    Intelligence

  • The Uganda Chapter will build and maintain database of service providers (accountants, lawyers, consultants, tax advisors, etc) that enable more efficient use of the provision of capital and technical assistance to private enterprises (SMEs) in Uganda.

  • Additionally there will be localized data and research on (private) investment to the private enterprise sector in Uganda.

    Uganda Chapter Coordinator

  • EAVCA is seeking a Chapter Coordinator to lead the efforts of the Uganda chapter, which is in the formative stages of being set-up as a subsidiary of the association.

  • In the first few weeks, the Uganda Chapter coordinator will conduct meetings with local industry practitioners to understand the key needs of
    the chapter.

  • The CC will then, in partnership with the local Uganda Steering Committee and EAVCA Board of Directors and the Executive team, formulate and deliver a Uganda chapter strategy and sector mapping, with concretized plans on outreach and building new networks in the region with PE & VC firms, DFIs, banks, angel investors, business member organizations etc
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Acting as the primary liaison between EAVCA’s executive team and the Uganda chapter – drawing down operational support from the HQ and ensuring that locally based members are actively engaging, as well as feeding information on the country back into the regional network

  • Communication: Managing communication to and amongst local members and other stakeholders in Uganda via quarterly newsletter, ad hoc membership communications via all channels

  • Membership: Promoting the chapter and recruiting new members

  • Administration: Leading the day to day operations of the chapter including organizing meetings and events, meeting regularly with members, managing the chapter budget, monthly management reports, quarterly board pack

  • Fundraising: In the first six months, developing the long term business and financial sustainability model for the chapter – including fundraising. Project by project sponsorship (conference, intelligence initiatives)

  • Training – liaise with the executive team to organize regular trainings and continually assess member training needs and revise plan accordingly

  • Networking – events (Virtual and physical) with Uganda members and regular network shops (Social drinks and workshops); organize an annual Uganda conference. Representing the chapter in industry gatherings and events in Uganda. Develop an investor network, supporting the development of the private sector, working on a pipeline sharing initiative for EAVCA members, reaching out to local and regional entrepreneurs and spearheading speaker series

  • Intelligence – work with the EAVCA executive team to build local data collection framework to ensure proper data collection and reports. Share regional market data, industry data, investment data/information and coordinate joint industry/sector studies.

    Knowledge, Education and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in relevant field (MBA, MPP, MPA, Masters in related field)

  • Minimum four years relevant experience

  • Fluency in English required (written and oral)

  • Highly skilled in leadership and team development

  • Self-starter with proven experience operating independently while at the same time reporting to multiple stakeholders

  • Applicants should have excellent project management experience and should be able to demonstrate projects they have taken initiative to begin and lead through completion

  • Applicants should have excellent communication skills and be willing and eager to work with colleagues from across the region

  • Experience in international development, enterprise development, venture capital, private equity, consulting, impact investing, or other related fields strongly preferred

  • Significant local experience in Uganda/East Africa
