Diakonia International Humanitarian Law Centre Legal Adviser Jobs in Kenya;Reporting to the Head of Unit & Senior Legal Expert, the Legal Adviser will contribute to the Africa Unit’s work by providing high‑quality legal analysis, advisory support, and capacity‑strengthening assistance to humanitarian partners. The role supports efforts to strengthen respect for IHL and improve protection outcomes for populations affected by armed conflict through legal research, training, strategic engagement, and policy‑oriented advice.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Advice and Analysis
Deliver legal and policy analysis on conflict‑related issues (classification of conflicts, protection of civilians, humanitarian access, counterterrorism, displacement, engagement with armed actors, EWIPA).
Respond to Helpdesk and advisory requests from humanitarian partners.
Produce legal briefings, policy papers, and protection analyses.
Capacity Building and Strategic Engagement
Design and deliver IHL training for humanitarian actors and civil society.
Support engagement with partners in conflict‑affected contexts (South Sudan, Ethiopia, others).
Contribute to dialogue initiatives on civilian protection and humanitarian access.
Humanitarian Diplomacy, Advocacy & Policy Development
Identify opportunities for humanitarian diplomacy and advocacy.
Engage with diplomatic missions, donors, UN entities, and regional organizations.
Represent the Centre at national, regional, and international forums.
Research, Partnerships & Programme Support
Contribute to research and policy initiatives advancing the Centre’s objectives.
Support partnerships with humanitarian organizations, civil society, academia, and donors.
Assist in programme design, proposal development, reporting, and monitoring.
Intersectional and Inclusive
Approach
Apply gender‑responsive, inclusive, and intersectional approaches.
Ensure advice and training reflect diverse experiences of conflict‑affected populations.
Qualifications and Requirements
Proven expertise in International Humanitarian Law (tested during interview).
JD or LLM in Law with specialization in IHL, human rights, or international criminal law.
Up to 3 years’ relevant experience in international organizations, UN, or NGOs.
Capacity to conduct advanced legal research and draft high‑quality texts in English.
Strong knowledge of conflicts in East and Horn of Africa.
Expertise in intersectionality and protection dynamics an asset.
Outstanding English writing proficiency; other languages an asset.
