GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.

In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on the commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors.

GIZ Ethiopia is looking to recruit an forester for the IWP (international forest policy) project in forest landscape restoration in the catchment of lake Abbaye and Chamo. Linked with the programme for Biodiversity and forestry, BFP.

specified below.

Position: Site advisor in forestry: buffer zone Borena Sayint National Park

Place of Work: Densa, Woreda of Maha Sayint with frequent travelling in the Region and to Addis Ababa

Remuneration: as per the GIZ scale

A. Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent of this post has the main responsibility for the:

  • Communication between the Programme and the partners of the site Borena Saint, Duty Station Densa;

  • Support the project partners in their tasks on site Borena Saint, Duty Station Densa;

  • Synergy between other projects in and outside the programme;

  • Follow up other projects;

    B. The Tasks

  • Communication between the Programme and the partners

  • To be aware of what is being done at the international level in relation to the forestry and conservation (especially at the level of the Horn of Africa);

  • To be aware and make the link between national level strategies and their implementation in the field;

  • To follow the activities of partners on national level and in the region of Amhara, and particularly on the site of Borena Saint, Duty Station Densa

  • To follow concretely the activities in Borena Saint, Duty Station Densa:

  • To facilitate the programme missions in this region

  • To be in charge of all logistical needs for site based events such as trainings, workshops and consultant visits

  • To facilitate all the GIZ – BFP activities in the park and surroundings

  • To supervise all kind of joint activities

  • To prepare and hand in all kind of information of the project

  • To make regular and professional monitoring of all kind of activities

  • To be linked with all kind of site based interventions, projects and strategies and make sure that our programme is synchronized with and well connected to all other donors, NGOs, public and private actions in and around the site;

  • Support the partners in their tasks

  • To be in charge for all kind of planning of field activities in the projects assigned;

  • To make sure that all stakeholders are linked in strategic events of the programme;

  • To play a role of “communication bridge” between all stakeholders of the project:

  • To keep permanently contact with BFP staff,

  • To guarantee at any time the information flow about projects from the management of programme to the partner and back,

  • To guarantee at any time the information flow among the components regarding the projects assigned,

  • To actively discuss all kind of concepts and approaches within the Programme and make sure, that messages to the partners are always in line with the Programme

  • To make sure, that the partner is at all time aware, that the program is working in a partnership and can only be successful, if there is a very close cooperation

  • To make sure that all appropriate information and update from the program related to the site is timely and accurately delivered to the local partner

  • To support the partner in their technical needs as much as possible and render
    assistance and guidance in improving their working efficiency and quality

  • Synergy between other projects in and outside the programme;

  • To cooperate in the strategic development of projects;

  • To ensure the involvement of the partner staff in all kind of project activities;

  • To ensure the involvement of communities in all kind of development of the buffer zones:

  • To make the link to Knowlde Management, communication and monitoring

  • To guarantee at all time, that information from the field is smart and verifiable;

  • To make sure, that the projects are well linked to the sustainable management of the park and to the regional activities of the Programme;

  • To follow up and ensure efficient and proper use of budgets and resources spent in the projects and to take co-responsibility for the respect of the procedures, rules and regulations of GIZ;

  • To ensure that all the projects designed, deployed, and carried out correspond to the overall goals of the programme of Biodiversity and Forests and the specific plans and project proposals.

  • Follow up other project

  • To coordinate all kind of activities between HQ and the projects assigned;

  • To be involved in all missions to the field and communicate with the beneficiaries of people travelling;

  • To ensure the proper implementation of all kind of plans of the programme in the project regions assigned;

  • To support the close monitoring of the activities in relation to the indicators of the assigned projects;

  • To participate in the analysis of funding requests from the partners;

  • To follow up the proposals of the partners and represent the Programme in related negotiations and on demand and in close cooperation with the supervisors and the management team.

    C. Other responsibilities

  • Support the administration of the program and ensure that the rules and regulations of GIZ are always respected.

  • Have a leading function in all administrative affairs on the site level and assume responsibility together with the main administration.

  • Take an active part in all the meetings, workshops etc. of the programme, mainly related to the projects assigned.

  • Be actively involved in the undertakings of the programme team and ensure that the common decisions are materialized in due time

  • Be actively involved in transversal tasks (gender, HIV AIDS, etc.)

  • Assume all other assigned tasks of the superior

    Job Requirements

    D. Qualifications required, the focus will be on forestry

  • Masters degree in conservation, wildlife management, forestry or very much related subject;

  • Minimum of 5 years reputable professional experience in the conservation and forest sector

  • Experienced in the application wildlife and ecological monitoring technologies, tools and techniques (such as camera traps and GPS), as well as inventory and forest management tools

  • Demonstrated experience in using geospatial tools (GIS and Remote Sensing) for all kind of decision making

  • Have proven communication skills;

  • Thorough experience in application of participatory approaches including community conversations; documenting and capitalizing on customary resource management institutions and practices;

  • Thorough experience in initiating and supporting resource based alternative livelihoods for affected communities

  • Exposure on protected areas contribution to mitigate Climate Change/REDD+ and ABS efforts;

  • Good mastering of the English language and at least one Ethiopian language
