Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services.

This internship is located in the Chinese Language Unit within the Translation and Editorial Section of the Division of Conference Services, UNON, under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Unit or the internship supervisor, as appropriate.

Candidates are encouraged to highlight their specific skills and/or experience in their application. They are asked to do so carefully in order to enhance the value of the internship for both themselves and the receiving Section/Service.

This internship is proposed for the period from April to May 2023.

The Internship is UNPAID. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the intern will assist with the following duties:

  • Translates into Chinese documents drafted in one or more of the other official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, Russian and Spanish), for training and other purposes and subject to revision.

  • Performs other related duties as required, including terminological work, creation of translation memories and participation in other special projects.

    Education

    To qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

    Interested candidates must be pursuing or pursued their degree in areas related to this Job Opening.
    In addition, interested candidates must:

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point);

  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and,

  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Work Experience

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in Chinese, which should be the candidate's main language, and knowledge of English and French are required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an asset.
