Job Description

Introduction

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), an international non-governmental organization (NGO), has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. DRC promotes and supports solutions to the problems faced by refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and migrants.

The organization has offices across the region, and has been operational in Ethiopia since 2009. With funding from bilateral and multilateral donors, DRC is currently implementing a range of activities across Ethiopia and Djibouti, including WASH and shelter provision, child and youth protection, gender based violence response, awareness-raising of migration risks, protection monitoring of migration routes, and livelihoods support for returning migrants or those at-risk of migration.

Overall purpose of the role:

Working under the direct management of the Team Leader Protection, the Protection Assistant, is responsible to give a substantial contribution to technical guidance and management of the youth empowerment project as required in the project documents and protection programming; Capacity building of junior national and refugee staff, beneficiaries, duty-bearers and other stakeholders ; Developing, coordinating, and/or conducting awareness-raising, training and dialogue sessions in peacebuilding and conflict management in Kule and Tierkidi refugee camps

Responsibilities and Tasks

To this end, it is expected that the Protection Assistant will perform the following tasks and responsibilities:

Technical Support:

  • Develop and facilitate youth recreational activities in the youth friendly spaces
  • Plan and facilitate capacity building for youth, including training on peace building, leaderships training, protection mainstreaming training and life skills
  • Involve the youth in youth-led awareness campaigns and initiatives targeting youth
  • Supervise and coordinate Social workers, and Role Models;
  • Conduct assessments and mappings and identify protection needs and vulnerabilities
  • Promote mainstreaming of Youth concerns and other protection concerns in all humanitarian interventions;

    General Management and Support:

  • Estimate quarterly program purchase requests according to the field requirements and submit requests on time.
  • Monitor supply and logistical needs of project and ensure adherence to all relevant DRC logistic policies, including management of materials in the youth recreational centers.
  • Ensure that all relevant financial documentation is complete and submitted to finance in a timely manner as required by DRC finance policy.
  • Manage all youth center facilitators/ Incentive social workers, supporting respectful and positive working relationships, which allow for the effective implementation of all DRC
  • Protection activities. This is to be achieved through leadership, team building, day-to-day support and capacity building.
  • Undertake daily supervisory, monitoring and support visits to project locations.

    Reporting:

  • Under the direction of the Team Leader Protection, support local level reporting for both internal and donor purposes on all Protection related activities. This will include providing weekly reports to the Team Leader Protection, and MEAL Officer.

    Job Requirements

    Education: (include certificates, licenses etc.)

  • Bachelor’s degree in in, Social Work, Sociology,
    Education, Psychology or other relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in an entry to mid to level position, preferably with experience in the NGO field.
  • Commitment to learning and implementing organizational policies and procedures.
  • Full proficiency in Microsoft Office.

    Additional Characteristics

  • Clear understanding of youth empowerment and protection, and issues surrounding youth empowerment/vocational training
  • Ability to lead, train, supervise, facilitate and motivate other Youth empowerment staff in their respective tasks in a professional, respectful and supportive manner.
  • Positive and professional attitude, able to organize, maintain composure and prioritize work under pressure, work overtime when necessary and be able to coordinate multiple tasks and maintain attention to detail.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team essential.
  • Ability to communicate in English and write clear and concise reports in English.
  • Computer literate, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Fluency in English language is required.
  • Strong planning, organization and problem solving skills with ability to work both independently and within a team in a demanding work environment.
  • Excellent personnel management skills, including diplomacy, tact and negotiating skills.
  • Integrity, strong work ethic, and ability to consistently meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Experience collaborating in protection, gender and human rights related activities.
  • Experience working with youth and young people and in community mobilizations and participatory approaches.
  • Experience living and working in cross-cultural and remote environments.
  • Ability to speak in NUER is an advantage.

    Languages:

  • Excellent verbal and written proficiency in English & Amharic.
  • Local language is an asset (Nuer/Arabic)
