Overall Purpose of the Role:

  • The Child Protection Officer’s primary function is to ensure quality implementation of the Child protection thematic area in synergy with the larger protection and community services components, which constitute the overall DRC program in Imvepi and Rhino camp.

    Key Duties and Responsibilities

    Coordination

  • Responsible to develop/strengthen relationships with agencies at the field level in close cooperation with the Protection Team Leader

  • Responsible for representing DRC in any relevant field based thematic meetings with stakeholders and otherwise as needed

  • Actively coordinate with the field staff of other DRC sectors and other organizations

  • Actively participate in the regular sector meetings and in house coordination meetings
    Maintain and strengthen existing networks through other service providers at the camp level, to ensure that survivors receive quality services and support both.

  • Actively participate in scheduled meetings such as Child Protection inter-agency coordination meetings.

  • Work in close collaboration with the response team to ensure ongoing needs of children and girls are being met in the prevention related activities.

  • Strengthen existing referral systems and networks of psychosocial service providers
    In collaboration with other partners, design prevention activities/interventions within the refugee and host community.

  • Participate in conducting trainings for partners on relevant organizational development areas and support peer learning between DRC and other partner agencies.

    Project development, implementation and reporting

  • Under the supervision of the Protection Team leader, contribute to the writing concept papers and proposal development on the CP thematic areas of protection. Also, identify CP gaps and vulnerabilities with a view to generating ideas for future projects with strong impact for the beneficiaries.

  • Support the protection assessment and ongoing risks analysis in order to design adequate responses.

  • Provision of technical support to staff members in linking DRC CP prevention and response to relevant protection standards, best practices and policy documents ensuring a rights-based approach program framework.

  • Under the supervision of the Protection Coordinator, ensure that all the CP protection approaches and tools are developed in synergy with the overall DRC’s national based protection initiatives.

  • Make sure that all the protection projects adhere to the highest CP standards and principles as well as DRC guidelines and accountability standards.

  • Contribute to the development of advocacy points based on assessment of situation and risks related to children.

  • In collaboration with the Protection Team Leader, proactively contribute to quality and timely weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports.

  • Ensure daily quality implementation, monitoring and evaluation of child protection- related projects and interventions.

  • Assist in organizing and delivering Child Protection trainings and promoting the refugee laws on the rights of children.

  • Maintain close contacts with local authorities and RWCs in the refugee settlement; intervene as and when necessary to protect children.

  • Support systems and operational procedures of out of home care programs
    including support systems for foster parents, caregivers, and families.

  • Support innovative problem solving and strategy development to address complex issues relating to the safety and wellbeing of children and their families.

  • Assess the knowledge and utilization of health and other services available for the children.

  • Work closely with the other program components to maximize program output and impact.

  • Oversee the daily quality implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Child protected- related projects and interventions.

  • Ensure updated filing and documentation of child protection cases in line with UNHCR and DRC standard tools.

  • In collaboration with the Rhino Camp Protection Team Leader, proactively contribute to quality and timely weekly monthly, quarterly and annual reports.

    Communication/Reporting

  • Proactively contribute to quality and timely drafting of weekly, monthly reports,
    Liaise with protection assistants in order to generate flash reports on major Child Protection risks and incidents.

    Logistics / Finance

  • Plan and coordinate proactively logistics and movements from and to different clusters

  • Support the Protection Team Leader to monitor financial commitments and expenditures against budgets and provide timely feedback on budget follow-ups.

  • Follow-up all DRC / DDG procedures for security, Finance, Logistics, HR and Administration

  • Responsible for comply with donors and internal DRC reporting and accountability policy and procedures

    Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Contribute to the daily quality implementation, monitoring and evaluation of projects and interventions in Rhino camp.

  • Identify, document and disseminate relevant project success, challenges and follow up on implementation of project’s action points

  • Assist in participatory needs/vulnerability and capacity assessments of PoCs.

  • Participate in project evaluations and assist in the analysis of results.

    Experience and technical competencies: (include years of experience)

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working with vulnerable communities, basic needs and protection programming experience, and/or advocacy programs.

  • Professional training in Child Protection.

  • Experience in protection interventions in line with Refugees operation with wide Child Protection.

  • Experience of working with UN or Non‐Governmental organizations.

  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken) is essential.

  • Good communication skills and ability to conduct training and awareness

  • Computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point)

  • Good self-organization and basic management skills.

  • Familiarity with Monitoring & Evaluation for UN-funded projects desired

    Education

  • A University degree in social sciences, social works and social administration, development studies, guidance and counselling or any relevant fields.
