Title: Call for papers entitled ‘’Access to justice and legal aid services for refugees’’.

Job Description

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), an international non-governmental organization (INGO), has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997.

DRC promotes and supports solutions to the problems faced by refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and migrants. The organization has offices across the region, and has been operational in Ethiopia since 2009.

Currently, with the support of EU Trust Fund, DRC is implementing the Dollo Ado Social Cohesion Initiative (DISCO) project, the Regional Development and Protection Program (RDPP) in Jijiga and the Enhanced Integration of Displaced and Displacement Affected Communities in Ethiopia (EIDDACE) in Shire.

In an attempt to address the lack of access to justice for refugees and host community members, DRC forged relationships with the university law faculties to enable service expansion to refugee camps and capacitated those legal aid practitioners and other relevant stakeholders regarding refugee law and the vulnerabilities of refugees.

The aim of the paper is to examine international and national legal instruments to access justice for refugees and the existing legal, institutional and structural facilities for the legal aid service for refugees and barriers.

Additionally, the paper should explore measures and initiatives undertaken to address these barriers as well as to provide best practices and recommendations for improving access to justice and legal aid service for refugees in Ethiopia.

The objective of all having this paper is two-fold

  • To create an understanding regarding refugees’ rights and limitation concerning access to justice
  • To
    promote and enhance access to justice for refugees, especially legal aid service.
  • share with the participant best practice and recommendation to improve access to justice including legal Aid service to refugees.
  • The winner of the award shall Submit abstract and the Final Paper with in the 8 weeks to DRC legal protection coordinator
  • Draft power point presentation shall be submitted two weeks before the actual presentation on the conference.
  • The writer of the paper shall present the paper to the conference participant.

    The paper should cover the following topics

  • International, regional and national basis for access to justice for refugees living in Ethiopia.
  • The opportunities for refugees concerning access to justice under the new refugee proclamation
  • Legal, institutional and structural challenges on access to justice in general and specifically to the legal aid service for refugees living in Ethiopia
  • International, regional and national Best practices and recommendations to enhance access to justice for refugees in Ethiopia, inclusive of legal aid services

    Research methodology

    Job Requirements

    Required Qualification and experience.

  • Proven experience of more than 5 years in research and analysis
  • LLM graduate or equivalent qualification in Law and/or Human rights
  • The paper Contribution to improvement of access to justice to refugees especially legal aid service
    research methodology
  • Clarity of writing and / or presentation
  • Fluency in English
