Open to all nationalities outside of Ethiopia. Applicants must be eligible to obtain an entry visa and work permit for Ethiopia.

Due to funder restrictions, support for accompanying partners/dependents is not available for this placement.

The Volunteer’s Role

Social barriers and lack of education are two of the largest challenges that women face in Ethiopia when it comes to proper nutrition.
The Growing Nutrition for Mothers and Children (GROW) project in Ethiopia is an initiative to address undernutrition in women of reproductive age and children under five years of age. GROW project is a partnership among CARE Canada, Cuso International and McGill University.
As the Health Education and Communications Advisor your role will be to provide support to Cuso International partner, Oda Bultum University, for the establishment and strengthening of community nutrition. You will complete this through assisting in the creation of education platforms, development and adaption of nutrition social and behavior change communication materials with local partners. Additionally, you will support the assessment of social barrier for proper nutrition practices.
You will live in the city of Chiro in Ethiopia in shared accommodations, which provides that best opportunity to meet and connect with similarly minded volunteers. You will be able to explore the beautiful area together and immerse yourself in the Ethiopian culture while contributing to the GROW program.

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Assist the assessment of main social barriers for proper nutritional practices

  • Support the establishment/strengthening of community education strategies and platforms to address the social barriers

  • Assist the design and development of appropriate nutrition social behaviour change communication (SBCC) materials

  • Support the effective implementation of community-level SBCC for nutrition activities, gather success stories & lessons learned and share with partners

  • Assist in the development of the nutrition SBCC capacity of local partners and the community

    Essential Academic Qualifications:

  • MA. degree in of the following fields of study:
  • Behaviour Change Communication/health education/promotion, Communication for Development, Communications, Behavioral Science.

    Essential Professional Background:

  • At least three years’ work experience in designing nutrition/& or health education interventions.

  • Demonstrated work experience in capacity development for social behavior change communications

  • Experience on the assessment of social barriers for optimal nutrition is an asset

    Oda Bultum University (OBU), found in Chiro Town, was established on 26th of November 2015 as an autonomous higher learning institution. The university currently is running seven different colleges that provide first-degree qualification training in 18 Agriculture and Natural Sciences related field of studies.

    The University is committed to producing competent and well-equipped graduates with the knowledge, skill, and attitude in all academic programs with different modalities. Besides, the University is also highly soliciting its academic staff to undertake problem-solving research activities. One of the strategies of the University is to link the research findings with teaching and community engagement activities. For these purposes, the University has already identified seven main research thematic areas with 34 sub- researchable themes.

    and Conditions


    Cuso International terms and conditions allow you to lead a modest and healthy lifestyle while being effective in your placement. This support package will cover basic living expenses for one volunteer and is not intended to cover home-based expenses (ex. loans, support payments, etc.) or luxury items such as imported items in placement or international personal travel.

  • Modest monthly living allowance (varies depending country)

  • Cost of required vaccinations, antimalarial medication and health insurance
  • Pre-departure training and in-country orientation
  • Travel and accommodation for reintegration debriefing weekend

  • Bonus: Additional return flight home or cash in lieu after 12 months of service for volunteers who extend for another 6 months

    Pre-departure Training and Briefing

    We commit to helping you prepare as best as possible for your placement. As a volunteer you will have an advisor to support you through the pre-departure process and you will receive essential training as part of your preparation. This training is designed to maximize your understanding of your placement country and culture, help you identify and plan your own learning, and help you stay safe and healthy during your placement.

    In-Country Training and Learning

    As a volunteer, you will receive an In-Country Orientation (ICO) that builds upon pre-departure training. This will be conducted by either the country program office or the supporting partner organization. This normally lasts for 2-10 days (depending on language learning requirements and other factors). In some countries, volunteers will be able to access ongoing language training opportunities. In-Country Orientation equips you with the relevant skills, knowledge, and country-specific information to be successful in your placement. Furthermore, our Country Program Office or local partner will provide you with continuous in-country support throughout the duration of your placement.

    Residency and Citizenship

    Residency

    The majority of Cuso International volunteer applicants are residing in Canada at the time of application and during the pre-departure process. Occasionally we received applications from volunteer applicants who are residing outside of Canada at the time of application. In both instances, between your application date and placement start date, we must be able to contact you and you must be able to contact us easily and promptly throughout the process.

    We may require your passport and would need to be aware of your current place of residence and any travel plans you may have during this time. You will also require unrestricted access to Canada during this time for training, as applicable.

    Citizenship

    Leaving your country of residence can have significant effects on your citizenship status in that country. It is your responsibility to research the consequences of travelling to Canada during the pre-departure process if you are living outside of Canada and of leaving your country of residence for a placement with the immigration authority where you live.

    By applying to this placement, you accept full responsibility for any consequences related to your citizenship, residency and immigration status or penalties as a result of travel to pre-departure training, an international placement or other Cuso International related travel.

    You must check the implications that apply to you, but examples include:

  • Canadian permanent residents may need to make arrangements with immigration authorities before travelling. These arrangements allow them to travel without risk to their status in Canada. Without them, residency status may be withdrawn.
  • Citizens of other countries, including those visiting Canada on a visa, may have travel restrictions.
