Overview of position
Following the notification of an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in North Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on August 1 2018, WHO conducted a formal rapid risk assessment which determined that the public risk is high at the regional level.
There is a significant risk of spread of the ongoing EVD outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to neighbouring countries because of the geographic proximity, high volume of movement of people and goods across borders, coupled with insufficient national capacities to prevent, detect and respond to EVD cases, and other factors which may enable transmission.
WHO raised the emergency to a Level 3 and has prioritized the neighbouring countries to DRC based on proximity and trade links to the North Kivu region of the DRC, the current EVD epicentre.
Priority 1 countries are Uganda, Burundi, South Sudan, and Rwanda.
As of January 2019, the number of confirmed cases has exceeded 680, making the current outbreak the largest-ever Ebola outbreak in DRC.
In view of these developments, the MoH and WHO continue to step up preparedness activities in the priority 1 countries, and multiple requests for logistics support and ebola preparedness activities have been made to our client.
