    About the job:


  • The CSIR has a vacancy for a Researcher: Transport Engineer/Planner for the Transport Management, Design and Systems Research Group, within the Smart Mobility Cluster.

  • The incumbent will conduct research in transport operations, travel behavioural modelling and designing transport systems for sustainability. This position is based in Pretoria.

    Key responsibilities:

  • Undertake research in transport planning, transport surveys, transport modelling, transport decision support systems, traffic engineering and/or statistical analysis;

  • Write research proposals, research reports, client reports and peer-reviewed publications;

  • Prepare reports, guidelines or other documents aimed at
    disseminating the results and outcomes of projects.

  • Contribute to the development of toolkits, simulation/forecast models and technology packages for effective deployment in the transport sector.

    Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in civil, industrial, or transport engineering, a master’s degree or studying towards one will be advantageous;

  • At least five years’ post-graduate experience in one of the following areas: transport planning, travel surveys, transport modelling, transport decision support systems, traffic engineering and/or statistical analyses;

  • Registered professional scientist or engineer, or being on a path to register would be an added advantage;

  • Good understanding of transport and the built environment domains in South Africa;

  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills;

  • Ability to work in a methodical manner is essential;

  • Ability to present ideas, concepts, plan and procedures;

  • Demonstrated track record of the ability to work accurately, independently and efficiently.
