County Government of Kirinyaga Medical Specialist – Phychiatrist Jobs in Kenya
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide specialized psychiatric clinical services including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and follow‑up of patients with mental illness, substance use disorders and psychological conditions.
Run specialized outpatient psychiatric clinics, inpatient wards and consultation‑liaison psychiatry for other departments.
Conduct forensic psychiatric assessments and prepare reports for courts and legal agencies.
Provide emergency psychiatric care, including management of acute psychosis, suicidal emergencies and substance withdrawal.
Initiate and manage psychotropic medication, psychotherapy, Electro‑Convulsive Therapy (ECT) and other therapeutic interventions.
Develop, implement and review county mental health policies, protocols and guidelines in line with Kenya Mental Health Action Plan 2021‑2025.
Plan and coordinate mental health outreach, community programs, school mental health and substance abuse prevention initiatives.
Lead and supervise multidisciplinary mental health teams including psychiatric clinical officers, nurses, psychologists, counsellors and social workers.
Train, mentor and coach medical officers, clinical officers, nurses and interns on mental health.
Conduct research, data collection and reporting on mental health indicators (KHIS) and use evidence for planning.
Manage psychiatric drugs and equipment, ensuring compliance with Mental Health Act 2022 and other relevant laws.
Participate in medico‑legal duties, quality assurance, CME and mortality audits.
Perform any other duty as assigned by the Chief Officer, Medical Services.
Job Requirements
Kenyan Citizen.
Bachelor of
Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from an institution recognized by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (MPDC).
Master of Medicine (M.Med) in Psychiatry from a recognized institution.
Registered and licensed as a Specialist in Psychiatry by MPDC.
Certificate of Registration and valid Retention Certificate from MPDC.
Demonstrated understanding of Mental Health Act 2022, National Mental Health Policy and county health systems.
Good leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
Certificate in computer applications from a recognized institution.
Commitment to values and principles outlined in Articles 10 and 232 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
Satisfy requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
