  • The consultant will directly contribute to the Work Package “Developing, testing and evaluating of best-bet options for pig manure management in Ugandan smallholder farming systems” in the Livestock CRP Priority Country project in Central Uganda, as well as to Work Package A1 “Setting up GHG emissions baselines and performance indicators for adaptation interventions” of the PCSL project. Both work packages aim particularly at generating accurate Tier 2 GHG emissions baselines for livestock systems, which are necessary to develop mitigation options for livestock production while also enhancing the productivity and sustainability of smallholder livestock systems.

    The consultant will contribute to this by undertaking the following research activities:

  • Conduct a household survey about ruminant manure management systems;

  • Adapt the same household survey to pigs and include animal- and human-health related aspects;

  • Collate and analyze the collected data and organize them in a survey database;

  • Calculate CH4 and N2O emission factors from local manure management practices in SW and Central Uganda based on the survey data;

  • Identify “climate-smart” manure management options by identifying challenges and possible strategies for sustainable improvement of manure management;

  • Write a report with recommendations on improved & climate-smart manure management for smallholder pig farms and semi-extensive ruminant farms.

    Qualifications and Competencies

  • A PhD in
    Agriculture, Agronomy, Land use and Land Management, Environmental Resource Management, Ecology, or similar.

  • Knowledge of and experience working with livestock farming systems and especially manure management in Uganda.

  • Good knowledge of processes leading to GHG emissions from soils and manure and understand their drivers and constraints.

  • Reliable, diligent, flexible and able to work with minimal supervision.

  • Experience working with the Open Data Kit (ODK) for household surveys.

  • Proficiency in statistical software such as SPSS and R.

  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Excel for data entry and knowledge of common practices of data quality control and data quality assurance.

  • Excellent communication skills both written and spoken in English and have published first-author papers in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Ability to speak a local language
