The International Center for Tropical Agriculture works to reduce hunger and
poverty, and improve human nutrition in the tropics through research aimed at increasing the ecoefficiency of agriculture.

CIAT’s global research contributes to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, and cuts across four key themes: big data, climate-smart agriculture, ecosystem action, and sustainable food systems.

CIAT works in collaboration with hundreds of partners to help developing countries make farming more competitive, profitable, inclusive and resilient through smarter, more sustainable natural resource management.

Through our research, we help policymakers, scientists, and farmers respond to some of
the most pressing challenges of our time, including food insecurity and malnutrition.

CIAT’s global team includes almost 1000 scientists, technical and administrative based in three major hubs: Hanoi, Nairobi
and Cali.

CIAT is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill one position in the Office of Partnerships & Communications (P&C). The P&C team is responsible for ensuring a robust and consistent pipeline of supporters, investors and partners that meaningfully engage with CIAT’s mission.

With a proven track record securing funds from a variety of sources, CIAT is now looking toward further expanding and diversifying its resource mobilization and communications platform.

This not only calls for the
establishment of innovative and strategic partnerships, but also the deployment of creative, effective and impactful communication strategies.

key role in helping to shape the future of the P&C Office.

CIAT is searching for an individual that is driven, passionate and who possess demonstrated experience working in research for development communications to assume the role of the Communications Officer for the African region.

This position will report to the Communications Team Lead and coordinate closely
with Africa’s Regional Director, joining a global team of dedicated staff that provides support to researchers and management in communicating CIAT’s accomplishments,

on-going research efforts, and impacts to a wide variety of audiences, with an emphasis on those that support the center’s scientific and
capacity-development pursuits.

The position will take place at the CIAT regional hub located in Nairobi, Kenya.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a communications portfolio in close coordination with the Communications Team Lead
    and Regional Director.
  • Lead story development efforts, identifying, researching and producing stories on CIAT’s research efforts regionally or globally.
  • Lead media outreach efforts, engaging and coordinating with the press for site visits, interviews with CIAT researchers, or their participation in CIAT events.
  • Support CIAT’s scientists and prepare teams for
    major regional or global events, including
    developing communications materials (posters, banners, and printed materials), supporting with speech writing and development of talking points, and coordinating booth space.
  • Ensure active social media presence, uploading pictures, and posting stories, publication announcements, and event information on the CIAT blog, or Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts.
  • Lead or support the preparation of regional or global newsletters, press releases, infographics, videos and other communications materials.
  • Support internal communications through updating internal news channels and databases.
  • Support the Communications Team Lead with the preparation of regional and global products
    (annual report, website, regionally-relevant materials such as brochures and information notes).

    Skills and competencies required:

  • Bachelors degree in communications or a related field (journalism, public relations), or equivalent in experience.
  • 5-7 years of demonstrable international experience as a communications officer in research and/or development organizations.
  • Solid understanding of agricultural, natural resource management, and livelihoods issues in the developing world.
  • Full written and spoken proficiency in English; Spanish proficiency desired.
  • Excellent communications skills, written and oral.
  • Experience with photography and/or videography desirable
  • Willingness to travel, including to field sites in which conditions might be rudimentary and physically demanding.

    Terms of employment

  • The position is internationally recruited .The initial contract will be for up to two (2) years, subject to a probation period of three (3) months, and is renewable depending on performance and availability of
    resources.
