Summary

The position’s primary focus & responsibilities are related the project management of two large landscape focused interventions:

  • Implementation and management of the Chyulu Hills Restoration Project

  • Local liaison and coordination point for the GCF TWENDE

    Key Responsibilities

  • The position’s primary focus & responsibilities are related the project management of two large landscape focused interventions:

    Project manager for the Chyulus Hills Restoration Project

  • Overall accountability for the local delivery of the project (phase 2)

  • Supervise and monitor contracted service provider activities in the field to ensure quality, timely and efficiency in delivery

  • Liaising/co-ordination with AfFD project lead; and HQ stakeholders (Restoration, CELB, Carbon). Set up and manage a periodic governance structure to facilitate feedback and issue/risk identification and resolution

  • Assist with the arrangement of site visits to the field, including arrangement of logistics, communication, guide, translation etc.

  • Act as an ambassador for the project and the liaison between community members and CI/CHCT. Oversight of landscape partner implementation activities

  • Communicate overarching goal of the restoration project to community, group ranch members, opinion leaders etc where necessary and in a sensitive and tactical manner

  • Ensure continuous delivery risk assessment and mitigation measures are put in place

    Local liaison and coordination point for the GCF TWENDE project

  • Project design; along with the establishment of the requisite project management, governance & reporting mechanisms

    Oversee the appointment and management of project sub-grantee’s

  • Restoration activities

  • Restoration Enterprise activities

  • Community Savings and Loans activities

  • Liaising and coordination with CI’s Northern Kenya landscape manager; as well as our landscape partners on the ground (NRT, MWCT, Big Life, Government (county government technical assistance funding and capacity)

  • Liaising and coordination with CI’s Ops/Finance leads on the GCF project

  • Liaising and coordination with IUCN (GCF Implementing Agency).

    CHYULU HILLS REDD+ PROJECT SUPPORT

  • Support Senior Regional Director: CFD in the oversight and coordination of CI’s Chyulus Hills REDD Project activities

  • Leverage CI subject matter experts (in Africa Field Division and globally) to support activities in Chyulu Landscape

    (SOUTHERN) KENYA LANDSCAPE STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT

    Develop CI’s overarching strategy in the Southern Kenya landscape

  • New opportunity development- focus on expanding / including the Eastern side communities in CI’s landscape interventions.

  • Strong coordination with Northern Kenya Project Manager to assist in the development and execution of a broader Kenya Country strategy

  • New funding concept/proposal development; focused on new/innovative investing

    Qualifications

  • Post-graduate degree in Rangeland ecology or any other relevant field with experience in enterprise /economic development

  • At least 7 years’ experience in conservation and landscape project management

  • Deep knowledge of the Amboseli-Tsavo ecosystem

  • Experience in overseeing Restoration and climate resilience interventions. Good working knowledge of carbon and REDD+ projects.

  • Proven track record in pastoral and agro-pastoral community engagement

  • Proven track record in managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders and donors

  • A strong people manager

  • Ability to start work in the short term

  • Ready to be based in Chyulus Hills landscape

  • Eligible to live and work in Kenya without employer’s sponsorship.

    Additional Qualifications

  • Ability to speak and work in English & Swahili. Spoken Maasai and/or Kamba language(s) would be beneficial

    Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a typical office environment.

  • Flexibility to work outside normal work hours to meet deadlines as needed.

  • This is a position eligible to persons who have the right to work in Kenya without CI sponsorship

  • The position is for a fixed term for period of 3 years Work is performed in a typical office environment.
