Purpose of the role:

The Deputy Director, Strategic Partnerships will play a key role in driving the growth and performance of CABI Africa by giving strategic direction and focused delivery to business development and partnerships with donors, partners (public and private sector), funding bodies, member countries, regional and global development organizations.

S/he will work closely with the Director General, Development, whilst reporting to the Regional Director, Africa.

S/he will operate at regional, thematic, and strategic programme levels to enhance the visibility and credibility of CABI as a partner of choice by strengthening existing relationships and building new partnerships.

The primary focus of the role is in Africa but will also include working with Corporate HQ, Key Account Management and other CABI centres to win support for global programmes.

In developing these opportunities, the jobholder must ensure consistent adherence to CABI policies and procedures, financial and project management procedures, HR and Health & Safety requirements Risk Management and IPR procedures.

Key Account-abilities:

  • To lead the strategic development of new funding and collaboration opportunities within the region drawing on CABI’s core competencies and unique abilities to deliver value to the market and matching these with donor and partner needs and requirements;
  • Identify, establish and maintain a network of contacts with donors, partners (public and private sector), funding bodies, member countries, regional and global development organizations providing support and ensuring relationships are managed professionally in order to develop and grow business;
  • Undertake personal visits to strategic partners and assist colleagues with presentation opportunities to key opinion leaders and decision makers;
  • Represent CABI at key conferences, workshops and other major events, as well as leading donor visits in Europe and the US;
  • To be the main link for donors and partners etc. led activities in the region, working with colleagues, including Key Account Managers (KAMs), to strengthen important relationships for existing donors and partners etc. and to build new relationships to support business development and fundraising;
  • Working closely with the Project Development Group (PDG) and KAMs to research and develop new sources of funding within the region and work with PDG on donor calls;
  • To provide market intelligence on business development opportunities and potential partnerships and collaborations;
  • To engage with and to provide technical and policy liaison with donors and partners etc. in areas relevant to agriculture and development;
  • As a member of the Management Team, assist in the decision making in the running of CABI Africa;
  • To ensure the efficient management of staff, financial and other resources;
  • To ensure the quality of the science conducted at and from the Centre;
  • To work with other CABI Business Units to contribute to and build programmes in support of CABI’s objectives in the region and globally.

    Candidate Profile

    We are seeking a dynamic and creative thinker with a passion for developing partnerships to deliver new opportunities and to grow business for the benefit of smallholder farmers to improve livelihoods.

  • S/he will be a credible, recognized and established thought leader able to provide strategic and technical leadership with the confidence and experience required to lead or support presentations to senior figures in our community of donors, partners (public and private sector), funding bodies, member countries, regional and global development organizations.
  • S/he will have
    extensive experience of working in Africa in international agricultural research and development (IARC, government, or private sector) and will have a successful track record of new business development in programme and projects, research and delivery.
  • S/he must have a strong scientific background and will be an outstanding networker.

    Education & Qualifications
  • PhD in a relevant scientific discipline essential;
  • Prince II qualifications will be considered an added advantage.

    Previous Experience
  • 10+ years’ senior management experience in a relevant research and development environment working with partners in the public and private sectors in Africa (IARC, government, private sector);
  • Demonstrable track record in successful project proposal development, securing funding for programmes, typically >$1M, ideally with national, regional and global partners;
  • Gravitas and confidence to engage senior figures in government, research and donors in strategic discussions;
  • Proven experience in successful project management, both in terms of technical and financial management;
  • Broad knowledge of agricultural research issues in developing countries and relevant institutional settings, as well as the gaps in stakeholder abilities to manage gaps in research and development;
  • Good understanding of issues related to developing countries policies, awareness creation, capacity development and best management practices. Personal Characteristics

  • Strategic thinker with a sharp analytical skill set and intellectual capability with attention to detail, able to resolve complex business issues;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment;
  • Strong negotiation skills;
  • Robust with the operational grip to handle a demanding work load, including considerable travel within Africa, and beyond;
  • Ability to work both persuasively and diplomatically in a team-based environment with a high degree of complexity and ambiguity and to deal with cultural differences of colleagues, customers and partners globally.
