THRIVE is supporting an integrated hygiene strategy that focuses on infant and young child feeding, deworming and improved mother and infant hygiene practices to significant reduce child stunting.

An integrated package of interventions targeted at mothers and infants will be supported and monitored to improve child growth and reduce prevalence of diseases, and these specific interventions will be adjusted over time based on field research results from the partner University (Emory).

Job Summary:
Reporting to the Senior Project officer, THRIVE, the Project Officer will be responsible for implementation, successful scale-up, and provision of sustainable, high quality Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programming at CRS Kenya.

S/he will support Local Implementing Partners (LIPs), research institutions and GOK Ministries of Health, at national, county, sub-county and community levels to deliver on the project’s goals and objectives in Homabay and Migori Counties.

He/She will work closely with research institution and analyze baseline results in order to come up with key behavioral interventions.

Specific Responsibilities:

Technical Assistance and Project Management
  • Provide technical assistance to the LIPs in WASH construction activities including preparing technical designs and bills of quantities.
  • Provide technical guidance and support quality capacity building to LIPs.
  • Coordinate with LIPs and other WASH stakeholders to ensure smooth project implementation
  • Support LIPs in developing SOW and participate in identification and recruitment of appropriate consultants and facilitators for undertaking selected project activities such as formative research, CLTS, sanitation marketing, environmental assessments and specialized staff training
  • Responsible for day to day management of the project’s activities, to ensure effective implementation and effective use of project resources, and suggesting results-based solutions to the Unit Manager for Health.
  • Ensure timely implementation of project activities per approved work plan.
  • Stay abreast of new developments in WASH and participate in relevant technical working groups and related forums
  • Design and implement social and behaviour change communication.

    Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting
  • Work closely with Emory University and other researchers on WASH pilot study.
  • Take lead in the documentation and dissemination of lesson leant, best practices and success stories from the project
  • Working closely with the MEAL team, support regular monitoring of project implementation for quality and timeliness of activities and reporting.
  • Prepare event and activity reports, field monitoring reports, and quarterly and annual/final project implementation reports.
  • Analyze interventions’ results, and trends for sharing with LIPs and stakeholders to enhance knowledge sharing.

    Implementation Research and Learning
  • Support implementation research activities under THRIVE II, including the provision of feedback to study Principle Investigator and monitoring data collection activities.
  • Assist the study Principal Investigator in identifying and coordinating a local data collection team.
  • Prepare and lead learning activities, including Learning to Action Discussions (LAD) for the THRIVE II project to ensure promising practices, lessons learned, and recommendations are identified, documented, disseminated, and used to improve program quality.
  • Facilitate the use of THRIVE II project data with partners, staff, and other stakeholders to inform decision-making and to identify lessons learned and promising practices.
  • Translate research findings into key behaviors for WASH and infant and young child feeding.

    Key Working Relationships:


    WASH Project Officer is a member of CRS’ Health Unit responsible for overall supervision of the WASH Project and participates in development of the WASH projects growth and sustainability.

    The PO will liaise with MEAL staff, and other technical staff to ensure a holistic, integrated, and comprehensive approach.


    Key functions include representing CRS in various forums and forging relations with the GOK, LIPs, other stakeholders, and the community. The PO will ensure the CRS mandate of skills building, mentorship and skills transfer in areas of WASH are implemented in tandem with the project documents.

    Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Bachelor Degree in Environmental Health Sciences, Public Health or other related fields. A Master’s Degree is desirable
    · Have strong project management skills.
    · Have solid working knowledge and practical skills in WASH including knowledge on AutoCAD and other WASH software.
    · At least 3 years’ progressive experience implementing WASH and other WASH related projects in Kenya, preferably in an NGO setting.
    · Have a good understanding of GOK WASH Policies and Guidelines.
    · Have a good grasp of challenges facing WASH in Western Kenya

  • Good command of written and spoken English

    Required Travel: 40% travel to Migori
