Call for Applications: Putting Energy to Work in Malawi

Through this request for application, UNCDF, in partnership with EnDev, aims to enhance access to climate-friendly energy solutions, prioritizing the inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

By offering grants and business development support through its Results Based Finance and Business Development Services, UNCDF is dedicated to addressing market gaps that hinder productive use of energy (PUE) companies from expanding into untapped or challenging markets, thereby fostering a business environment that attracts further investment.

Successful Applications Will Receive

Performance-based payment ranging from $95,000 to $150,000.

Business development services to improve RBF readiness and promote Gender, Equity and Social Inclusion.

Connection to investors for potential future funding.

Main Target Groups

The initiative aims to boost rural MSMEs' efficiency in various sectors by improving access to energy and PUE technologies. UNCDF focuses on promoting climate-friendly PUE solutions with an emphasis on inclusivity for women, youth, and people with disabilities. Through Results Based Finance (RBF) grants and Business Development Services (BDS), UNCDF addresses market gaps, helps PUE companies reach underserved markets, showcases viable

business models, and attracts further investments.

Technology Solutions to Be Supported

Applicants should promote and distribute Productive Use of Energy (PUE) solutions to off-grid commercial, agricultural, and other businesses. These solutions, which include Solar-PV-based energy access or new electrical appliances, aim to enhance productivity and performance.

PUE technologies must be solar-powered. Considerations include DC Solar systems with energy-efficient appliances, AC solar systems with energy-efficient appliances, and DC energy-efficient appliances for customers with existing solar systems. The RBF facility rewards VeraSol-certified or GIZ-approved technologies, requiring at least a 2-year warranty.
