African Economic Research ConsortiumEstablished in 1988, African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) is a premier capacity building institution in the advancement of research and graduate training that inform economic policies in Africa.
The principal mission is to strengthen local individual and institutional capacity to conduct independent, rigorous inquiry into problems pertinent to the management of sub-Saharan African economies through synergistic programmes combining economic research with postgraduate training in economics.
The Training ProgrammeThe AERC’s Training Programme augments the pool of economic researchers, policy analysts and policy makers in sub Saharan
Africa by supporting graduate studies in economics, and improving the capacities of departments of economics in participating universities. Key components of the programme include:
The Collaborative Masters Programme (CMAP), which spans departments of economics in 25 public universities;
The Collaborative PhD Programme (CPP), which brings together eight (8) participating universities; and
The Collaborative Master’s in Agricultural and Applied Economics (CMAAE) Programme, which is spearheaded by departments of agricultural economics in 17 public universities in sub-Saharan Africa.
AERC Master’s and PhD Bridge Programme for Underrepresented Countries and Groups AERC has introduced a Master’s and PhD bridge programme with the aim of addressing the limited competitiveness of potential students from underrepresented countries and groups (women, post-conflict and fragile states, etc.) for

This involves equipping participants with skills on quantitative methods, microeconomics and macroeconomics, which are prerequisite courses for the CMAP, CMAAE and CPP.
