Job Summary

The Busara Center for Behavioral Economics is seeking qualified individuals for the position of Behavioral Design Specialist in Kenya.

The Behavioral Design Specialist will support the Projects Division team in delivering projects by providing expertise in design thinking research.

The Behavioral Design specialist is expected to have knowledge of qualitative and design thinking research methods and tools including strong research, synthesis, ideation and visual storytelling skills.

The Behavioral Design Specialist will be responsible for driving design throughout the organization.

S/he will also develop and lead design and innovation workshops for partners, network members and leaders across a variety of sectors, including Financial Inclusion, Health, Governance and Accountability, Agriculture and Women’s Empowerment , as well as contribute to internal-facing initiatives.

S/he will use their design expertise to help shape the scope of our engagements, lead design projects end-to-end and develop the design capabilities of our broader team.

The ideal candidate will be able to think strategically, and use a spectrum of design methodologies to develop highly effective design solutions and interventions to drive impact and scale.

S/he is required to have a high level of self-motivation and energy, an optimistic “can-do” attitude, and very strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Due to the sensitive nature of our projects and our clients, extreme attention to detail is required.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Experience Design, Human Centered Design (HCD), Design, International Development, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics or related fields.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in user experience design or design strategy, including customer behavioral research, ideation, prototyping, and user testing
  • Prior experience in social impact or development: A passion for social change typically evidenced by a strong interest and prior experience applying creative approaches to social issues such as economic development, global health, education or the environment.
  • Expert knowledge of HCD and design thinking methods and tools: Strong research, synthesis, ideation and visual storytelling skills.
  • Strong ability to present information in a concise, insightful, structured and provocative manner, both in written and oral forms.
  • Can complete advanced HCD deliverables in several of the following specialty areas (ethnographic or contextual research, concept generation, prototyping, usability study, information architecture, interaction design, etc.)
  • Strong ability to communicate the power of design to stakeholders from varied backgrounds.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and attention to
    detail.
  • Is visually and verbally articulate; including the ability to lead interactive group development sessions
  • Deep skill-set and proven track record in one or more of the following design disciplines: Product design, service design, digital design & prototyping and/or information visualization.
  • Working knowledge of research methodologies, qualitative and quantitative data analysis and statistics
  • Experience working with low-income populations in emerging markets and/or experience working on the continent.
  • Experience of applying behavioral or psychological constructs and theories to design approach.

    Responsibilities
  • Communicating and demonstrating the value of Design Thinking Research approaches through exceptional problem-solving skills
  • Conducting training Busara staff in how to use Design Thinking principles in their work.
  • Contributing to thought leadership initiatives and activities related to qualitative research and experimental design
  • Keeping abreast of developments in design thinking, and promoting design thinking research capability within Busara through knowledge sharing and training activities and the development of new approaches.
  • Collaborating effectively with Busara projects team members at all stages of projects; maintaining responsibility for your own time and deliverables
  • Leading design engagement from a customer behavioral lens - from customer research to ideation, prototyping, and user testing: Be able to quickly identify behavioral change levers.
  • Engaging in multiple large-scale research projects at a given time.
  • Effectively facilitating behavioral research and design workshops and trainings
  • Sharing knowledge and developing the design and innovation capabilities of the team.
  • Developing user profiles, personas and task matrix, task lists, process flows, user journey maps and wireframes
  • Working with analytics and data science, designing and analyze A/B tests
  • Conducting UX research using the full range of UX research techniques: surveys, usability testing, text/structured data analysis, qualitative interviews and focus groups
