Overview

  • Building Tomorrow, an international social-profit organisation galvanizing communities to support thriving schools in underserved areas throughout Uganda is seeking a highly motivated, values-aligned Finance Manager.

  • In this position, you have the opportunity to be a part of delivering exciting, life-changing education programs to the hundreds of thousands of students we serve.

  • You will play a pivotal role in shaping the day-to-day operations of Building Tomorrow’s Finance Team with a focus on managing organisation expenses, leading the annual budgeting process, analyzing the organisation’s cost structure and keeping leaders abreast of the organisation’s financial performance.

    The Organization

  • Started in 2006, Building Tomorrow improves access to child-friendly, community-supported schools by providing an inclusive, transformative education for underserved children.

  • Through our Thriving Schools program, we deploy Building Tomorrow Fellows, the change agents who recruit and train Community Education Volunteers, together bringing out-of-school children into the classroom while working with school leadership to ensure access to an inclusive, transformative school environment. We also work hand-in-hand with local communities, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Education to construct new primary schools where no formal primary school exists.

  • To date, with a full-time staff of 105, Building Tomorrow has enrolled over 55,000 out-of-school children and reaches over 101,000 students daily.

  • Building Tomorrow has received funding and recognition for its innovative work from the Clinton Global Initiative, Educate A Child, Mastercard Foundation, Echoing Green, the Segal Family Foundation, and Forbes Magazine.

    Key Responsibilities

    Administration Strategy (30%)

  • In collaboration with the US-based Finance Manager, implementing and overseeing checks and balances system of financial controls to ensure sound fiscal management

  • Working closely with Country Director to establish financial priorities, and ensuring theses are understood by the larger financial team in the US and Uganda

  • In collaboration with the US-based Finance Manager, designing financial tracking and information systems that link with programmatic impact data and enable the organisation to properly value and scale its impact

  • Managing banking relationships, including cash management and any borrowing arrangements
    Preparing financial information for external auditor and ensuring a smooth annual audit process

  • Implementing and reviewing the internal control system at all levels of the organisation.

    Budget Implementation & Management (30%)

  • Working with department leads to develop quarterly and annual budgets coinciding with work plans, and providing overall budget management across all teams

  • Providing a monthly QuickBooks-driven financial report with narrative analysis of organisation’s budget vs. actual performance, trends, significant changes or variance, etc.

  • Advising Tomorrow Team on budgetary implications of current spending trends and planned activities, as well as helping program leaders identify opportunities to mitigate overspends or reallocate savings

  • Assisting to ensure the organisation achieves optimal value for every shilling spent in Uganda

  • Supervising the Finance Coordinator, approving their work plans and evaluating their performance

    Accounts Management (10%)

  • Preparing a finance report to be shared with department managers each month

  • Preparing financial reports and providing analysis as requested by organisation leadership

  • Ensuring accuracy and complete detail of in-country accounts and bookkeeping

  • Serving as the point person for the organisation working with outside accounting firms

    Procurement & Vendor Coordination (20%)

  • Working alongside department heads, ensuring all in-country procurement processes are run according to established criteria, and providing financial guidance as
    appropriate

  • Maintaining relationships with key vendors and suppliers, and proactively refreshing the vendor pool as appropriate

  • Verifying the procurement and disposal process to ensure they comply with existing rules and guidelines

    Resource Management Tracking & Reporting (10%)

  • Guiding the preparation of program budgets for existing and new programming, per funder guidelines

  • Providing detailed expenditure reports to grantors and board finance committee on regular basis

  • Ensuring accounting, procurement, and documentation protocols are observed both for
  • safeguarding of organisation’s assets in the office and in the field,

  • full compliance with donor agreement specifications

  • Ensuring an updated fixed asset register is kept for the organisation

    Must Have

  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to produce quality written products tailored to various audiences

  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills, and a team-oriented mentality

  • Exceptional attention to detail

  • Highly motivated and ability to self-start, as well as see through projects from beginning to end

  • Professional demeanor and willingness to engage with partners through email, phone calls, and in-person meetings

  • Strong time management skills and ability to juggle multiple tasks at once

  • A curiosity in the world around him/her
    Proficiency in QuickBooks or similar accounting system(s), Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint necessary. Familiarity with Salesforce a plus.

  • At least five years experience in financial management systems and controls a plus.

  • Strong understanding of accounting and financial statements.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or business administration from an accredited institution.

  • A Professional Qualification, at least ACCA, CPA Level 3 or Full Professional qualification in accounting

    Compensation

  • Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

  • This position is based in Kampala and reports to the Country Director.
