Introduction


The British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) seeks to appoint a Director to replace Dr Joost Fontein, who is taking up a new appointment as Professor of Anthropology at the University of Johannesburg. The post will commence on 1 September 2018, and appointment will be made for a fixed term of three to five-years in the first instance. Applications are welcome from academics in any discipline of the humanities and social sciences who have demonstrated research interests in eastern Africa. Applicants should be mid-career academics with an outstanding record of research and publication, experience in management, and a track record of securing large research grants. A good understanding of the research grants landscape in the UK, and in Europe more widely, will be a strong advantage. The salary will be commensurate with the experience and position of the appointee.

Responsibilities

  • Be an established mid-career academic researcher active in the social sciences and/or humanities, with a track record of internationally-excellent publications on eastern Africa, and with experience in securing research funding and management.
    Play a key role in maintaining BIEA as an internationally recognised centre for research excellence in African studies. S/he would be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the BIEA’s existing partnerships with the Institut Français de Rechérche en Afrique (IFRA) and the Rift Valley Institute (RVI) and for forming new partnerships with academic bodies internationally and in the region and to extend BIEA’s public profile in East Africa. S/he should also maintain official liaison with government bodies, and foster good relations locally and in the international academic community.
  • Take forward the task of diversifying the income sources of the BIEA, through initiating externally-funded major research projects, through involving BIEA as a partner in externally-funded projects initiated by others, and through other income-generating and fund-raising work, including an active profile of events in the UK and internationally
  • Have overall responsibility for developing the Nairobi facilities which include a library shared with IFRA, seminar rooms and accommodation for visiting scholars. As the activities of the BIEA develop, the Nairobi headquarters may need revisions and / or development, and the Director would be responsible for recommending such improvements to Council.
  • Implement the research strategy of the BIEA, as well as pursuing his/her own research in areas of identified strategic importance. The Director will work with the BIEA’s Research Committee to devise and implement the Strategic Research Plan, and will directly supervise the BIEA’s core team of full-time researchers, whose work
    contributes innovative and policy-relevant scholarship in the humanities and social sciences
  • Act as the Chief Executive Officer of the BIEA. The Director will report directly to the Council, ensure the efficient conduct of the affairs of the BIEA, and will be the formal accounting officer for the Institute’s public funding. The Director will be the line manager for BIEA’s Kenya country director, who will take responsibility for the management of the Nairobi base, including its research library and equipment, and for ensuring that the website and weekly bulletin fully reflect the work of the BIEA. The Director will be expected to report quarterly to Council about the activities of the BIEA and supervise the production of the Annual Review.
  • S/he will take full responsibility for the BIEA’s budget (currently c. £500,000 pa) and must ensure the best use of resources. The Director will be expected to produce annual funding applications to the British Academy, and develop other funding sources; to provide draft annual budgets for review and approval at Council; to provide quarterly financial reports to the Council; and to assist with the completion of the annual accounts.
  • S/he will work with designated members of the Council to produce and regularly update the BIEA Strategic Plan and such other documents/reports as may be required by Council
  • S/he will participate in the selection of candidates for academic, research and graduate appointments; such appointments will need the approval of the Council.

    Qualifications

  • An established record of outstanding research publications on eastern Africa, in any discipline of the humanities and social sciences.
  • An established international reputation as a scholar.
  • Clear evidence of experience in management.
  • Evidence of a track record of securing external funding.
  • Evidence of a collegial approach and an ability to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries.
  • Understanding of the research grants system in UK
  • Understanding of the research grants system elsewhere in Europe, and/or in North America.
