British Institute in Eastern Africa Project Development Officer Jobs in Kenya


Introduction

The British Institute in Eastern Africa seeks to appoint a suitably experienced, self-motivated and skilled person to the post of Project Development Officer (PDO) in its Nairobi office on Laikipia road, Kileleshwa. This is a fixed term contract for one year in the first instance. This is a senior post reporting directly to the Director.

The PDO will work to support the Director in the development and implementation of the BIEA’s strategic development programme. This aims to diversify the BIEA’s income streams and to further BIEA’s strategic objectives, including strengthening policy making in and on the region; advancing Research Excellence in and on Eastern Africa; promoting internationalism through forging new forms of collaboration between scholars, civil society and policy makers; developing plans and coordinating projects to achieve these objectives. The PDO will lead in the development of new funding applications and income-generating projects, and will take responsibility for the implementation of these.

Responsibilities

  • Management and development of training courses, including the coordination of the annual Research Methods Summer School and the three-monthly Research and Academic Writing Bootcamps, both projects which were first initiated in 2017-18. Design and take a leading role in the initiation of new intensive language and familiarization courses for professionals. Source and contribute towards the BIEA’s commercial facilitation of contract research in social sciences in Eastern Africa
  • The initiation, development and management of new income-generating ventures and commercial partnerships with external partners, such as the Documentary Institute in Eastern Africa, and related projects.
  • Receiving and processing research affiliation requests from international scholars and research groups seeking research clearance in Kenya. Acting as liaison between all external partners coming through, or working closely with the BIEA, and local and regional partner institutions, and relevant government bodies such as NACOSTI
  • Spearhead the hosting and administration of external research projects and international research events
  • Liaising with the UK-based Training and Research Development Fellow, and the BIEA Council and any sub-committees of that council, in
    the development of new funding applications, projects and funding schemes, both those led by BIEA, and those in which BIEA acts as significant partner. Handle all requests for the BIEA’s involvement in academic research funding applications, and in the implementation of those projects, in conjunction with external higher education and research partners in the region, in the UK, in Europe and internationally. Identify and/or forge new partnerships with external research partners, locally, regionally, in the UK and Europe and internationally, for the promotion of the BIEA’s mission, and to open up new streams of funding and activity.
  • Lead the development of new marketing and commercial strategies for BIEA services, including its research affiliation and administration services, equipment and vehicle rental, guesthouse accommodation, conference facilities and office space, amongst others. Lead the annul review of service and membership charges. Seek to develop new commercial services.

    Qualifications:

  • Minimum, a master’s degree in the social sciences or humanities and/or social development or their equivalent.
  • A PhD would be an advantage.
  • Relevant experience at the national or international level providing advisory and hands-on experience in management, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development projects, research contracts and professional training.
  • Strong written or verbal communication and organisational skills.
  • Skills in Information Technology with experience of university level teaching and service is a strong advantage.
  • Knowledge of BIEA activities will be an added advantage.
