British High Commission Trade & Investment Adviser Jobs in South Africa; The Invest NI team in Africa is responsible for assisting NI companies with market assessment and prioritization, as well as market entry. As opportunities across the African continent grow, Northern Ireland companies have turned their attention to key markets across Africa.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading on the key sectors of food and drink and life and health sciences and will be responsible for scoping and presenting opportunities in these sectors to NI companies and assisting them with market entry. The candidate may be required to support the Regional Director on enquiries from other sectors, if needed. The role will also involve providing support with business planning and budgeting for the pan-Africa region.

The successful candidate will need to focus on building relationships within Invest NI, with regional FCDO and DBT colleagues as well as with external stakeholders like business chambers and the private sector.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • The role will entail building and maintaining a knowledge base and market intelligence on the life and health sciences and food and drink sectors across key markets in Africa.

  • This will involve identifying and initiating relationships with key decision-makers, scoping out key market events within these sectors, supporting NI companies with market information, partner identification and market entry and being responsible for the delivery of outcomes (under Invest NI KPIs) for these sectors.

  • The role will also involve identifying key events taking place within these sectors, strategically planning involvement (through a stand etc.) or attendance and taking responsibility for arranging inward visits to Northern Ireland from companies and/or stakeholders in these sectors.

  • Prepare timely and topical sector briefings and reports, insight analysis and company specific reports as required.

  • Take responsibility for managing, monitoring and evaluating the value of business memberships, preparing reports on business value against money spent.

  • Collaborate with the DBT network across Africa in delivering export support to NI companies.
    Assist and sometimes lead on the arrangement of visits by senior staff to Africa, as well as on networking and business events held in-market.

  • Work closely with our Trade Advisory Service provider for the commissioning of client
    research reports, monitor progress and evaluate the outcomes and service for NI companies.

  • Contribute to and update records on client assistance through Invest NI’s Customer Relationship Management Portal.

  • Contribute to team objectives and targets for delivery in Africa.

    Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Minimum of five years of business development and/or account management experience, with a focus on international trade promotion to generating business leads and with proven success in converting these to outcomes in Africa

  • Minimum of three years relationship management and stakeholder engagement experience working with a range of businesses, Government and industry partners to help businesses succeed in Africa

  • Strong analytical and research skills to process complex information at pace; including the ability to identify trends based on your own and third party research and produce concise reports for internal and external audiences

  • Strong organisational skills and experience leading on projects and campaign work, including events and trade fair participation and overarching sector activities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and positive and flexible approach to teamwork

  • A self-starter, able to work independently and able to contribute to team KPIs and goals and

    Excellent communication and presentation skills


    Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Track record of delivery in trade context assisting companies to export and grow internationally;

  • Strong professional network of established contacts in key opportunity sectors and markets in Africa; and

  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in food and drink and/or life and health sciences sector.
