    Main purpose of job:

    The Trade and Investment Communications Officer will provide communications support to the British Government’s commercial objectives in Kenya, across trade and investment, trade policy and trade finance.

    The role holder will sit within the British High Commission’s communications team, delivering campaign style communications to promote the UK as a partner of choice in Kenya for trade, inward and outward investment and trade finance, and supporting messaging on the business environment, technology and skills for prosperity themes.

    The role holder will help raise the profile of the UK Government’s offer of support, guidance and expertise on trade and investment, which can help British and Kenyan businesses reduce risks, save time and increase profit.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    Responsibilities include:

  • Delivery of the trade and investment communications campaign, which promotes the UK as the partner of choice in Kenya.
  • Developing and delivering content in support of this campaign, based on audience insight.
  • The role-holder will be adept at using/engaging a variety of different methods of communication as appropriate, including: mainstream media; social media; internal communication
  • Supporting the British High Commission’s trade and investment team to design and deliver events in support of their objectives and the Mission’s Prosperity strategy
  • Drafting speeches and lines to take for: the British High Commissioner; the Deputy High Commissioner; Her Majesty’s (Deputy) Trade Commissioner for Africa; and the British High Commission’s Director of Trade.
  • Supporting these individuals with public or media engagement on the trade and investment agenda
  • Work with the UK Government’s Department for International Trade’s press office in the UK to ensure that key messages about the opportunities in Kenya (exporting, ODI, export finance and trade policy) reach target UK audiences.
  • The role-holder will also work as part of the DIT Africa virtual Comms Team, led from Johannesburg.
  • Lead on the use of the GREAT brand in Kenya, guiding the High Commission on how to best use the brand, under the stewardship of the Great Campaign Manager in Dubai
  • Delivery of a GREAT monthly highlights in-market report, which summarises activity from that month.
  • Lead and deliver GREAT Challenge Fund activity in Kenya
  • Respond in a flexible way to support the region and DIT Network if and when needed
  • Key to success will be ongoing learning and development to be able to deliver the requirements of the role.
  • The role holder will need to be able to work in a matrix, developing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, and working collaboratively and flexibly across HM Government.

    Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • Degree in Communications or similar
  • Work experience in
    a Communications role
  • Experience of working with actors from both the public and private sector

    Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • Knowledge of trade and investment
  • Branding and event planning experience

    Required Competencies

    Leave:
  • Members of staff are entitled to paid annual leave, which is earned, from the day they commence employment. Entitlements are as follows:
  • Grades B3 (L) 30 days
  • In addition to annual leave, the BHC normally observes no fewer than 9 and no more than 14 Kenyan and British public and religious holidays in a year.
  • These vary from year to year and are at the discretion of the High Commissioner. A list of holidays is published each year.

    Working Patterns:
  • Monday to Thursday: 0800 - 1630
  • Friday: 0800 - 1400
  • The position is full-time, but flexible working hours will be considered.
