    Main purpose of job:


    You will be a key part of the British Embassy Juba Political team.

    This team is at the centre of the Embassy’s work supporting the UK-South Sudan bilateral relationship, including UK effort in support of implementation of the Peace Process.

    You will ensure the Ambassador, Special Envoy to the Sudans and other senior figures within the UK Government have up to date and accurate political analysis.

    This is a dynamic and fast paced role that will be very rewarding for the right candidate.

    You will also play the lead role in the Embassy’s communications function. There is a very strong team spirit and collaborative approach to the team’s work, but you will need to be self-starter, capable of working off your own initiative and owning issues.

    Roles and responsibilities

    Context

  • The UK is committed to supporting South Sudan achieve peace.
  • As part of the Troika (UK, US and Norway), a leading donor (both humanitarian and conflict mitigation), through our support to key peace process activities at national and sub-national level and with up to 400 UK troops attached to the UN mission (UNMISS), the UK is a leading supporter in South Sudan.

    Responsibilities
  • In support of the Head of Political and the rest of the Political team you will:
  • Provide timely, well sourced and accurate political reporting on developments in South Sudan, with a particular focus on internal political developments and implementation of R-ARCSS.
  • Lead on Parliamentary engagement. Tracking legislation and developing relations with influencers.
  • Develop relationships with a range of key actors including members of Government, other political parties civil society, the media, state co-ordination offices and UNMISS. .
  • Lead on implementing the Embassy’s communications plan. Co-ordinate communications activity across the Embassy between all UK Government departments.
  • Identify opportunities for the UK to demonstrate the breadth of its support to South Sudan.
  • Monitor news reporting and make sure stakeholders are informed on significant events. Lead on embassy social media profile.
  • Co-ordinate the Embassy Chevening Scholarship programme to ensure it attracts high calibre and diverse applicants and the best candidates are awarded scholarships after a well-run interview process.
  • Help Alumni build a strong network.
  • You will be required to support other corporate activities and to provide ad-hoc administrative support to the political team.
  • This is a growing team and your specific areas of political focus may be amended to meet new priorities.
  • You will be working alongside four UK and six locally engaged colleagues in the team.

    Essential qualifications, skills and experience

    Up to date knowledge of South Sudan politics

  • A diverse network of relevant contacts,
    or the experience of building such a network rapidly

    Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
  • Experience working in an Embassy or UN
    Experience working with the media
  • BA in international relations, political studies or similar subjects.
