British Army Training Unit Kenya Generator Mechanic Jobs ; The Generator Mechanic will organise and carry out routine inspection, maintenance, servicing and repair of stand‑by and operational generators, compressors, ventilation plant and mechanical systems. The role requires compliance with JSP 375, Vol 3, and BATUK safety standards, ensuring equipment is operational at all times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organise and carry out inspection, maintenance and repair of generators.

  • Service compressor plant, ventilation plant, roller shutter doors and lifting equipment.

  • Diagnose faults, order spares and complete logbooks.

  • Identify and make safe faulty installations in compliance with JSP 375.

  • Maintain knowledge of Petroleum and Mechanical Systems Safety Rule Book.

  • Supervise and manage labourers and junior tradesmen.

  • Respond to emergencies on a 24‑hour basis.

  • Complete First Aid and Fire training courses.

  • Uphold BATUK health, safety and equal opportunities policies.

    Secondary Duties

  • Work indoors and outdoors under varying weather and terrain conditions.

  • Exposure to hazardous traffic, fumes, gases, chemicals, confined spaces and vibration/noise.

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing and lifting up to 50 pounds.

  • May be required to undertake duties in confined spaces, petroleum, mechanical systems and asbestos.

  • Accept responsibility for delivering results and supporting team performance.

  • Promote diversity and fair treatment in the workplace.

    Competences / Qualifications / Experience

    Essential

  • Trade Test 1 in Electrical.

  • KCSE certificate.

  • 3 years’ experience in generator repair, troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Knowledge of installation and maintenance of engines, compressors and mechanical equipment.

  • Ability
    to troubleshoot and resolve non‑routine repair issues.

  • Safe use of motorised and hand tools.

  • Awareness of occupational hazards and safety practices.

  • Heavy equipment operation techniques.

    Desirable

  • Valid Kenya driving licence (Class B, C & C1).

  • Competence in electronic control module programming (FG Wilson PowerWizard, Deepsea, Easygen).

  • Ability to prepare technical reports on equipment failures.

  • Understanding of UK, national and local laws, codes and regulations including BS 7671.

  • Knowledge of BATUK standing orders and organisational policies.

    Training Requirements

  • Structure and Function of the British Army, Defence Estates and BATUK.

  • Health and Safety at Work.

  • COSHH awareness.

  • Manual Handling.

  • First Aid & Fire Awareness.

  • Equipment Care including Use and Maintenance.

  • MOD Safety Rules & Procedures (JSP 375, Vol 3).

  • BS 7671, IET Wiring Regulations + Amendment 3.

  • Working at Height, Confined Spaces, Petroleum, Mechanical Systems and Asbestos training.
