Job Description/Requirements

Our client is a Kenyan nonprofit public foundation that supports community driven development initiatives. They work through strategic and carefully selected partnerships in Kenya, both at the national and community level and strongly believe in the ability of communities to identify and prioritize their needs and with a little external support, pursue their own solutions to these needs.

They also recognize that pro-poor policies are critical to be able to address some of the systemic challenges faced by vulnerable groups, hence the need to push for the development of the necessary policies to support the promotion of a just and fair society, as well as good governance.

Overall Job Purpose

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager is responsible for leading the development and implementation of Foundation’s communications strategy and strengthening internal and external communications in support of Foundation’s overall strategy and goal in promoting flourishing and resilient communities.

The Communications Manager serves on Foundation’s management and works closely with senior leadership on brand and profile positioning.

The role holder will additionally develop, execute, oversee, and coordinate all media, communication activities of the Foundation, and provide strategic leadership on communications related projects i.e., Technology Donation and Discount programme targeted at non-profits and implementation of the Information Technology (IT) policy.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Review and implement Foundation’s communications strategy and plans that supports the overall organizational strategy.

• Working with Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) team, collect data and knowledge with the objective of communication success of Foundation’s programmes and amplification of impact working with communities. This includes supporting MEL in packaging and presentation of reports, impact, and learning.

• Develop communication tools and materials to support communication directed at specific target audiences. These shall include high quality publications for the Foundation such as the annual report, bi-annual newsletters, monthly e-newsletters, corporate brochures, and factsheets, press releases, digital materials, and video/documentary productions, as well as other related brand collaterals.

• Lead the communications team in delivering the organizational corporate communication responsibilities including - brand profile and reputation management, monitoring the unit’s budget and managing external consultants.

• Provide strategic communications and advisory support to Foundation’s management and Board.

• Manage media relations with national, regional, and global news outlets to convey and support Foundation’s strategy i.e., media briefs, interviews, offsite visits, and special events. Ensure Foundation’s work is well documented and receives broad coverage from target media.

• Provide overall oversight on Foundation’s digital media platforms i.e., Website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn, taking overall responsibility for strategic content sharing.

• Take lead
in implementing Foundation’s Technology Donation and Discount programme that targets non-profits in East Africa with donated and discounted software products, services and trainings offered by Microsoft, Google, Symantec, Zoom among other global ICT partners. This includes strategically fundraising for the programme to meet the tech demands and needs for non-profits in East Africa.

• Implement the IT policy. Together with the IT Programme Officer, support, build, implement and improve technology solutions by improving Foundation’s operational efficiency. This includes and is not limited to oversight of the ERP system, financial system, servers and managing Foundation’s Microsoft 365 platform.

• In liaison with the Head of Partnerships and Resource Development, facilitate the Resource Mobilization and Communication Board Committee meetings and implement its recommendations. Additionally, ensure the fundraising and communications strategies are aligned in strategic approaches to internal and external communications i.e., impact reporting and raising institutional brand profile while leveraging on MEL insights and data with the goal of ensuring joint efforts support Foundation’s partnerships and fundraising goals.

• As part of the senior management team, participate in periodic reviews of the organization’s strategy and programmes, and ensure teams have a broad understanding of how communications integrate with and strengthens organizational strategy, programming, operations, resource acquisition and support functions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, development studies or any other relevant discipline. Master’s degree an added advantage.

• At least eight years’ relevant work experience in communications or professional experience in development communication.

• Have had experience as part of a senior management team of a reputable development or relevant exposure to development sector.

• Very strong attention to detail, with a meticulous approach. Good analytical skills.

• Ability to understand the dynamic environment the Foundation operates in, finding creative solutions to adapt communications to resonate with different audiences.

• Strong communication and writing skills, excellent verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

• Competent in relevant IT skills and with expertise on web platforms.

• Self-management and a team player.
