Job Description

The purpose of this position is to provide leadership, teaching, and administrative functions. The Head Teacher is responsible for the implementation of the curriculum, education policies and programs. He/she also leads in the development and implementation of the school’s strategy, work plans, and budgets and also supervises the operations of the school.

The Duties and Responsibilities of Head Teacher Shall Be to:-

  • Supervise the interpretation and implementation of the curriculum, by ensuring teachers prepare the professional documents that include curriculum summaries, schemes of work, lesson plans, lesson notes, exercise books, registers etc. to ensure curriculum designs are covered in time for evaluation and that the academic standards in the school are maintained.

  • Introduce new ideas and programs for improvement in teaching and learning. Initiate curriculum development process, its implementation and evaluation so as to ensure that the curriculum is relevant and achievable in the school.

  • Organize workshops/seminars/symposiums to share ideas and further knowledge in subject areas.

  • Organize remedial actions to support learners with performance gaps.

  • Prepare curriculum summaries, schemes of work and lesson plans to teach the subjects of specialization to impart knowledge, skills and attitudes to the learners.

  • Assess learners on subjects of specialization and ensure assessments done in all classes are credible and up to standard.

  • Ensure learners are adequately prepared, registered and presented for the National Assessments in accordance with the Kenya National Examination Council regulations.

  • Prepare timetables, annual calendar of events, Term dates, duty rotas and other planning documents.

  • Ensure that the necessary instructional materials are sourced, availed and utilized by teachers and learners to support curriculum implementation.

  • Ensure proper discipline is maintained in the school by teachers, non-teaching staff and learners by Serving as a role model to create a conducive environment for learning.

  • Ensure health, safety of learners and security of institutional resources.

  • Promote the welfare of all staff and learners within the school for motivation, personal and professional growth.

  • Embrace teamwork through collaborative planning and teaching to ensure consistency and improvement
    in curriculum delivery.

  • Co-ordinate and provide guidance and counseling services to teachers, non-teaching staff and learners and instill norms and values for harmonious co-existence.

  • Promote harmonious relations and linkages between the school and stakeholders such as the local community, parents and private sector organizations.

  • Ensure appraisal of staff in the school is done.

  • Supervise maintenance of inventories to ensure availability of the necessary facilities and items.

  • Answer parents queries and complaints on academics and discipline matters.

  • Coordinate staff, Board of Management and parents’ meetings.

  • Ensure and facilitate access and retention of learners in the school.

  • Any other duties as may be allocated and as may be required from time to time.

    Requirements

    To qualify for appointment as The Head Teacher, the candidate must: -

  • Must be in possession of a Bachelors of Education (BEd) degree.

  • Have a P1 certificate.

  • Have a TSC Certificate.

  • Have served as Head Teacher or Deputy Head Teacher in an Urban primary school for a minimum period of three (3) years.

  • Have experience in CBC.

  • Must have demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor and provide professional support to other teachers.

  • Be aged between 34 years and 40 years.

  • Have good spoken English.

  • Must be confident and outgoing, able to work with all ages.

  • Have excellent computer skills.

  • Must be highly organized and self - motivated.

  • Must have staying power, not one who has changed jobs every other year.

  • Must be a Christian.

  • A teacher of mathematics and science is an added advantage.
