Bridge International Academies Associate - Officer Learning Innovation Jobs in Kenya

About the Role

As a Learning Innovation Officer in the academics group you will be responsible for guiding the improvement of lessons and learning materials by providing objective, daily feedback on teacher experience and pupil outcomes.

As a Learning Innovation Officer, you are the "eyes and ears" of the Academic Team - a mix of experts at headquarters creating teacher training, books, and lessons.

In addition, the role supports the design, execution, and evaluation of Learning Lab initiatives. You will be in schools each day observing lessons, collecting data, interviewing school staff, and providing ongoing feedback to the Instructional Design team.

Our lessons and pupil achievement depend heavily on ongoing feedback from you.

The Learning Innovation Department is hyper-focused on ensuring that lessons are driven by clear objectives, that teachers are fully supported, and that pupils are prepared for academic success.

Being a part of this team means believing that our pupils' performance can always be improved through better- lessons.

It also means being courageous enough to provide challenging feedback and holding all stakeholders accountable for educational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Play a central role in what pupils learn on a daily basis through a dynamic feedback loop with Instructional Design Writers.
  • Communicate and guide Instructional Design Writers on how to improve lessons.
  • Assess learning materials and how they are being integrated into the classroom.
  • Test and evaluate new, effective ways to improve instructional practices and integrate technology.
  • Fill in a specific observation form for each lesson and test new lesson designs.
  • Interview teachers and academy managers and assess the availability of resources in a school.
  • Organize field notes, analyze photos and assessment data to inform improvements in pupil learning.
  • Contribute to academic planning with Learning and Development Manager and Academic Director.
  • Visit 1 school per day and observe no less than 5 full lessons per day.
  • After observation of the lessons, you will give the lessons ratings, using Bridge's particular approach to feedback.
  • You will also write out a detailed description of what happened during the lessons. That feedback will help the team to learn about strengths and weaknesses of the lessons themselves, so they can make changes.
  • This role will entail observing a new procedure or little things that may be unique to a single academy - just to gauge if the new way is better than the existing way.
  • For example, perhaps one school leader has organized a well-attended revision session that happens early each morning, and parents really like it.
  • You will also gather both quantitative and qualitative feedback that will help drive Academic team decisions and help us improve the academic program at Bridge, a little at a time.

    Qualifications
  • You should have a keen eye for observing others.
  • But that's not enough. The very act of visiting schools and noticing 'What works and what fails' must be intellectually interesting to you - a daily puzzle you want to solve each day.
  • Experience developing learning materials and working in the education or community organization sector.
  • You also must be an effective writer, able to communicate what you see and
    hear.
  • You must be an effective interviewer - able to get teachers, parents, pupils, and academy leaders to speak honestly to you.
  • Sometimes they will be nervous that if they share problems with you, it could cause trouble, so you need to be reassuring.
  • Fluent in English with proven ability to articulate your viewpoint clearly.
  • Bias towards action and relentless focus on achievement for yourself and others
  • Flexible and you love to work in a dynamic and fast changing environment.

    You’re also
  • A detailed doer – You have a track record of getting things done.
  • You’re organized and responsive.
  • You take ownership of every idea you touch and execute it to a fine level of detail, setting targets, engaging others, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done.
  • You can multi-task dozens of such projects at once and never lose sight of the details. Likely, you have some experience in a start-up or other rapid-growth company.
  • A creative problem-solver – Growing any business from scratch comes with massive and constant challenges.
  • On top of that, Bridge works in often fragile, sometimes volatile low-resource communities and with complex government systems.
  • You need to be flexible and ready to get everything done effectively, quickly, and affordably with the materials at hand.
  • A relentless advocate – The children we serve and teachers we empower never leave your mind.
  • You know them, get them, have shared a meal with them (or would be happy to in the future).
  • You would never shrink back from shaking a parent’s hand or picking up a crying child, no matter what the person was wearing or looked like.
  • Every decision you make considers their benefit, experience, and value.
  • A malleable learner – You believe you can always do better.
  • You welcome constructive criticism and provide it freely to others. You know you only get better tomorrow when others point out where you’ve missed things or failed today.
  • A data-driven decision-maker – When making decisions, you don’t rely your intuition alone.
  • You collect data, you analyze it and make decisions with clear justifications.
  • A curious investigator – You ask why a lot.
  • You don’t just take what you see and accept it.
  • You wonder why it is that way, and are aware that the world we see is created by human choices and actions – and it could be different.
  • You wonder, and see the world as wonderful even when you want to change a part of it that is unjust.
