Blue Ventures is a marine conservation organisation that puts people first. We support
coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries and restore ocean life. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and is growing globally.

Across a dozen countries, we’re partnering with traditional fishers and community organisations to design, scale, strengthen and sustain fisheries management and conservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform, and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities across the globe.

Summary job description

We are currently recruiting a regional partner support coordinator to support our evolving
operations supporting our partners in Kenya. The position will provide a broad range of support to East Africa and Comoros functions across Blue Ventures, to promote the effective, safe and efficient management of people and programmes systems across our expanding global operations. Reporting to the Regional Partner Support Coordinator, this is a full time role based in Blue Ventures’ Mombasa, Kenya, with occasional travel to East Africa working closely with overseas colleagues, partners, field teams and communities.

The successful candidate will be a motivated, proactive and highly organised individual, with
an excellent knowledge of the small-scale fisheries, marine conservation and rural
development sectors. You will demonstrate a proven track record of project design and management, as well as exceptional written communications. Ideally, you will have experience of community-based conservation and development initiatives in coastal Kenya.

We are looking for an individual who is open to new ideas and embraces innovation, who can demonstrate experience of building effective working partnerships for conservation and/or development. Assessment of applications will include candidates’ alignment with BV’s core values and mission to support human rights-based approaches to marine conservation and fisheries management.

Responsibilities

Oversight of Blue Ventures’ partnerships

  • Support the regional partner support coordinator develop harmonised tools, systems and work plans across all partnerships in Kenya - ensuring consistency and alignment with those in the Partner support team and organisation

  • Under the leadership of the regional partners support coordinator, facilitate the use of a common approach to developing fisheries management and governance capacity building in our partners through the development of training modules, best practice and monitoring tools

  • Support the regional partner support coordinator identify and address gaps in our
    team and partner capacity, designing technical support plans and providing training as appropriate

  • Alongside the fisheries officer, gather regular feedback from community partners to
    guide efforts to improve fisheries governance and management performance

  • Assist the regional partner support coordinator evaluate and document key learnings, best practices and relevant fishery/country information, including broader learning around fisheries management

    Technical support

  • Work closely with the regional partner support coordinator in Kenya to support local partners and community members in improving local fisheries management and governance practices, based on national systems

  • Partners, and the community institutions they serve, often lack skills and capacity to understand natural resource economics and to develop capacity in financial management. With the support of the regional partner support team, lead the development of financial governance in community institutions

  • Support the socio-economic development of small scale fishing communities by
    identifying opportunities to integrate programmes such as alternative livelihoods and savings and loans schemes into our work

  • Alongside the regional partner support coordinator, identify opportunities
    to strengthen policies that encourage and sustain community action in co management, working with colleagues in the WIO and UK to advocate for policy development

  • Identify opportunities for and coordinate learning exchanges with partners and communities

    Skills and experience

  • Existing eligibility to work in Kenya

  • Postgraduate or graduate degree and/or proven experience in relevant field
    (environmental, marine or conservation science)

  • Fluency in written and spoken Kiswahili and English

  • At least 5 years demonstrable practical experience working in co-management and community-based conservation or development in Kenya

  • Experience of developing multi-sector partnerships, including with communities, fisheries authorities, and NGOs

  • Clear commitment to a community-based approach to conservation and development

  • Proven experience in project management and team leadership

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to convey complex messages clearly in presentations, meetings and written form, and to connect with people of all levels and cultural backgrounds

  • Excellent organisational skills, an ability to marshall resources, and continually improve systems and processes

  • Capacity to undertake research and development work independently as well as part of a team

  • Strong technical reporting skills, and experience of preparing project reports for funders

  • Excellent time management and organisational skills

  • A strong team player who is also able to work independently

  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office, Google Apps, and social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google plus)

  • Experience of the small-scale fisheries, marine conservation or rural development sectors, working with institutional partners, conservation and development sectors.

  • Proven experience in financial planning and control, and budget preparation and management
