Job Summary
The Production Team Leader is responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient flow of production within the Assembly and Moulding departments through effective coordination of operational activities and resources.
The role ensures production targets are achieved in line with Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) requirements and daily production adherence plans.
The position leads Production Supervisors and operators to ensure efficient schedule execution, product quality, workplace safety, and continuous operational improvement.
The role also focuses on improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), minimizing downtime, supporting Autonomous Maintenance initiatives, implementing 5S practices, and driving continuous improvement projects.
Main Responsibilities
Production Planning and Execution
Ensure daily production targets are achieved in accordance with S&OP plans and production adherence requirements.
Coordinate production activities across Assembly and Moulding operations to maintain uninterrupted production flow.
Monitor production performance throughout shifts and implement corrective actions where necessary.
Allocate labour and equipment resources effectively to optimize operational efficiency.
Collaborate with Planning, Maintenance, and Quality teams to resolve operational constraints.
Team Leadership and People Management
Lead, manage, and support Production Supervisors and production personnel.
Provide direction, guidance, and performance expectations aligned with operational objectives.
Coach employees and support capability development and accountability.
Foster a disciplined, collaborative, and high-performance work environment.
Ensure effective shift handovers and communication between teams.
Equipment Performance and OEE Management
Monitor and improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
Identify and address equipment downtime, inefficiencies, and performance losses.
Work closely with maintenance teams to ensure timely resolution of technical issues.
Ensure equipment is operated according to standard operating procedures.
Autonomous Maintenance
Drive implementation and sustainability of Autonomous Maintenance practices.
Ensure operators conduct cleaning, inspections, and basic maintenance activities.
Train teams to identify early signs of equipment wear and potential failures.
Support proactive identification and resolution of minor equipment issues.
5S and Workplace Organization
Implement and maintain 5S standards throughout Assembly and Moulding areas.
Conduct workplace inspections and compliance audits.
Promote ownership of workplace cleanliness and organization.
Identify opportunities to improve workplace layouts, storage systems, and visual controls.
Continuous Improvement
Identify and implement operational improvement opportunities.
Lead initiatives aimed at improving productivity, efficiency, quality, and waste reduction.
Encourage employee participation in improvement programs.
Utilize performance metrics and production data to support decision-making.
Quality Assurance
Ensure products meet established quality standards and specifications.
Monitor quality performance and address
defects promptly.
Support root-cause investigations and corrective-action implementation.
Promote a "Right First Time" manufacturing culture.
Safety and Compliance
Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and company requirements.
Promote proactive safety awareness and hazard reporting.
Participate in incident investigations and corrective actions.
Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment and safe work practices.
Reporting and Communication
Monitor and report production performance, downtime, and operational challenges.
Maintain accurate production records and shift reports.
Communicate key operational updates and performance information to management.
Participate in daily operational and cross-functional meetings.
Idea Driven Organization (BIC Up Program)
Promote continuous improvement through participation in the BIC Up program.
Encourage employees and stakeholders to submit ideas that improve safety, quality, efficiency, and workplace conditions.
Review, validate, and support implementation of improvement initiatives.
Track idea implementation and report progress and outcomes.
Support employees in developing practical and measurable improvement ideas.
Recognize employee contributions to continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
Grade 12 (Matric) – compulsory.
Diploma in Production, Operations Management, or a related field – compulsory.
Minimum of 5 years' experience managing people and production processes within a manufacturing environment.
FMCG manufacturing experience is required.
Technical or engineering experience will be advantageous.
Formal training in supervision or production management will be an added advantage.
Skills and Knowledge
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Experience using stock-control systems and ERP platforms such as JDE.
Strong understanding of production performance management and OEE.
Knowledge of Quality Management Systems, work instructions, and operational procedures.
Ability to train and guide operators on quality standards and operating procedures.
Sound knowledge of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) practices.
Knowledge of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 standards will be advantageous.
