Better Shelter is a social enterprise based in Sweden that designs and develops modular temporary shelters with an aim to improve the lives of persons displaced by armed conflicts and natural disasters.

The project – initiated in 2010 in partnership between Better Shelter, the IKEA Foundation and the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR – is seeking to recruit two Regional Project Representatives who will be responsible for providing support on all the Better Shelter projects and activities in the Africa and Middle East regions.

The Role

The purpose of the role is to support Better Shelter and be our first line of contact for our partner organisations at country and regional level.

The position aims to provide solid presence and on-site support to our partners before, during and after implementation of shelter projects including providing technical know-how and relevant information, facilitating for the successful planning and execution of projects.

The representative is responsible for the organization and execution of trainings, management of operational tasks related to deliveries, claims, monitoring and evaluation of projects.

The positions are based in Nairobi with frequent travel (minimum 50%), sometimes to medium or high-risk settings. One position carries responsibility for projects throughout sub-Saharan Africa and the other for projects in the Middle East region. Both include independent work away from the project team.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree (minimum) in social science or development, engineering, or equivalent
  • Minimum five (5) years of working experience from implementing humanitarian projects on site, in shelter and/or refugee settings
  • Experience in teaching and training of trainers, or equivalent
  • Solid knowledge of International humanitarian organizations and the UN
    system
  • Fluency in English (written and verbal) with relevant language skills in French and /or Arabic depending on post responsibility (Africa, Middle East)
  • Driving license and documented/proven driving skills
  • Proficiency in common IT and communication tools
  • Ability to travel minimum 50% of working time to emergency areas and on short notice
  • Eligibility to work in Kenya
