BBC World Service News Editor, Horn of Africa Languages Jobs in Kenya

BBC World Service News Editor, Horn of Africa Languages Jobs in Kenya; BBC World Service is creating a new Horn of Africa Language Services Unit in Nairobi, bringing together BBC Somali, BBC Afaan Oromo, BBC Tigrinya, and BBC Amharic under a single editorial leadership structure.

This is one of the most significant editorial leadership opportunities in the World Service: a chance to shape how the BBC serves millions across Ethiopia, Somalia, and the wider Horn of Africa diaspora during a moment of profound political, humanitarian, and digital change.

Why Join the Team
The News Editor is the BBC’s single editorial voice for the region. You will set strategic direction across four language services, lead a shared on‑demand production hub, and drive a digital‑first approach that deepens reach and relevance — particularly among young women, the most underserved and fastest‑growing audience segment.

You will work through four Assistant Editors who hold day‑to‑day editorial responsibility for their services, creating conditions for collaborative journalism that none could achieve alone.

Key Responsibilities and Impact

  • Set and implement editorial strategy for Horn of Africa Language Services, translating BBC priorities into a coherent regional vision.

  • Lead transformation of the four language services to digital‑first, video‑led operations.

  • Build a cohesive editorial team across multiple languages and cultures, while preserving service distinctiveness.

  • Line manage four Assistant Editors and one Senior Journalist Team Manager, providing strategic direction, mentorship, and career development.

  • Lead the unit’s digital strategy, developing platform‑specific approaches for YouTube, social media, WhatsApp, and BBC digital products.

  • Commission and champion ambitious journalism — investigations, documentaries, data journalism, long‑form and mid‑form video — using the Production Hub as the delivery engine.

  • Act as the BBC’s single editorial interlocutor for the Horn of Africa in senior internal forums and with external stakeholders.

    Skills and Experience

    Essential Criteria
  • Proven track record of senior editorial leadership in journalism, producing ambitious, high‑impact journalism in complex political environments.

  • Demonstrated success in breaking down silos and building collaborative cultures.

  • Proven ability to develop and implement successful data‑led video strategies with measurable digital growth.

  • Experience leading teams through significant organisational change with transparency and care.

  • Deep knowledge of East Africa, particularly Ethiopia and Somalia, their politics, societies, languages, and media landscapes.

  • Experience driving audience growth among young and female audiences through digital‑first, video‑led strategies.

  • Advanced understanding of audience analytics, search optimisation, and platform performance metrics.

  • Strong communication skills in English and at least one of Somali, Amharic, Afaan Oromo, or Tigrinya, with ability to represent the BBC in senior forums.
