BBC World Service Journalist - Afaan Oromo Jobs in Kenya
BBC World Service; is creating a new Horn of Africa Language Services Unit in Nairobi, bringing together BBC Tigrinya, BBC Somali, BBC Afaan Oromo, and BBC Amharic under a single editorial leadership structure. BBC Tigrinya provides independent, impartial journalism for Tigrinya‑speaking audiences in Ethiopia and Eritrea. The service is transforming into a digital‑first, video‑led operation built around two editorial streams: On the Day and On Demand.

The Journalist is the core production resource across both streams, expected to work fluently across platforms and formats — writing web articles, filming, editing, presenting videos, voicing radio packages, and publishing social posts — often within the same shift.
Key Responsibilities & Impact
Write clear, accurate, engaging articles for the BBC Tigrinya website daily.
Produce and present short‑form video content (news moments, explainers, interviews, reactions) for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook, and Shorts.
Produce and present radio programmes or visualised podcasts.
Self‑shoot, present, and edit short video content using mobile or camera equipment.
Contribute to visualised podcasts and linear radio output, performing on screen and on air.
Research, script, film, and edit video content independently or collaboratively.
Develop and maintain contacts across the Horn of Africa for original newsgathering.
Contribute to live coverage of breaking news across all platforms,
including livestreaming.
Skills & Experience
Essential Criteria
Proven ability to produce content across multiple digital platforms (website, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, radio).
Strong digital writing skills in Tigrinya, producing clear, accurate, SEO‑aware articles.
Experience producing and presenting short‑form video content for social media.
Practical experience self‑shooting video using mobile or camera equipment.
Confidence presenting to camera for broadcast and streaming audiences.
Experience producing radio content, including scripting and voicing packages.
Solid experience sourcing, verifying, and reporting news under deadline pressure.
Fluency in written and spoken Tigrinya and English, with ability to write, sub‑edit, and present professionally in both.
Knowledge of data‑driven content development, using analytics to inform commissioning and grow engagement.
