BBC World Service Assistant Editor - BBC Swahili Jobs in Kenya; Reporting to the Service Editor, the Assistant Editor – On the Day is the senior editorial lead for BBC Swahili’s daily news operation. You hold full editorial responsibility for all time‑sensitive output across digital, visualised radio, and TV.

You will work closely with the Assistant Editor for On Demand (Dar es Salaam) to ensure strong editorial coherence across BBC Swahili’s offer. Together with the Senior News Editor, you form part of the core leadership of the service.

This role demands editorial authority and digital ambition, requiring confident decision‑making at pace, leadership of a large and diverse team, and driving cross‑platform integration central to BBC Swahili’s transformation.

It is also critical to growing reach among younger and female audiences through visualised radio, YouTube streaming, and consistent social media output.

Key Responsibilities and Impact

  • Lead BBC Swahili’s On the Day stream, fostering editorial rigour, platform agility, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Oversee breaking and daily news output across three shifts (morning, afternoon, night) 24/7, ensuring timely, accurate delivery across radio, TV, and digital platforms.

  • Champion a digital‑first editorial approach, commissioning stories with multi‑platform distribution in mind.

  • Support growth of BBC Swahili’s visualised audio output from Nairobi studio, enabling YouTube live streaming and short social media assets.

  • Collaborate with On Demand Assistant Editor to coordinate joint story commissioning and promotion.

  • Support Senior News Editor in implementing BBC Swahili’s growth strategy, focusing on younger (16–24) and female audiences.

  • Coach and develop team members, fostering inclusivity, high performance, and gender diversity.

    Skills and Experience

    Essential
    Criteria
  • Significant editorial leadership in digital or broadcast news, managing fast‑paced, multi‑platform daily output.

  • Strong digital‑first editorial experience, commissioning and delivering content across digital, social media, TV, and radio.

  • Sound editorial judgment under pressure, managing compliance and risk in complex political/media environments.

  • Deep understanding of audience analytics tools, using data to inform commissioning and editorial decisions.

  • Experience with visualised or streamed radio/TV output, maximising digital potential.

  • Ability to work collaboratively across editorial streams, managing competing priorities effectively.

  • Commitment to diversity and inclusive leadership.

  • Fluency in written and spoken Swahili and English, with ability to represent the BBC in internal forums.

    Desirable
  • Ability to shoot, script, and edit video stories using Final Cut Pro (FCPx) and QEdit.

  • Experience delivering polished, engaging, audience‑focused content optimised for digital platforms (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook).
