BBC World Service Assistant Editor - BBC Afaan Oromo Jobs in Kenya; BBC World Service is creating a new Horn of Africa Language Services Unit in Nairobi, bringing together BBC Somali, BBC Afaan Oromo, BBC Tigrinya, and BBC Amharic under a single editorial leadership structure.

BBC Afaan Oromo serves the Oromo community across Oromia and within a substantial global diaspora, providing independent, impartial journalism to audiences often underrepresented in mainstream international media.

The Assistant Editor, BBC Afaan Oromo, is the day‑to‑day editorial lead for the service. You hold full editorial responsibility for all output across radio, digital, video, and social platforms.

You will report to the News Editor who sets the regional vision, while retaining editorial autonomy to serve audiences with rigour, relevance, and independence.

This role demands strong editorial courage and judgment, especially in covering Oromia’s complex political situation, requiring consistent application of BBC Editorial Guidelines under pressure.

Key Responsibilities and Impact

  • Lead BBC Afaan Oromo’s transformation to a digital‑first, video‑led service.

  • Develop and implement a data‑led video strategy to drive measurable digital growth, focusing on younger and female audiences.

  • Use audience insight, analytics, and platform trends to inform commissioning, distribution, and editorial decision‑making.

  • Commission, edit, and deliver high‑impact original journalism, including exclusives, investigations, explainers, and digital‑first content.

  • Collaborate with other Horn of Africa Assistant Editors and the News Editor to coordinate coverage and avoid duplication.

  • Work with the Horn of Africa Production Hub to enhance original journalism using its video and digital expertise.

  • Embed a culture of performance awareness, supporting journalists to understand engagement drivers
    and proactively adjust content mix.

    Skills & Experience

    Essential Criteria
  • Proven ability to lead and develop teams, set direction, and foster creativity and collaboration.

  • Strong track record of commissioning and delivering high‑impact digital journalism, with deep understanding of digital distribution (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, BBC platforms).

  • Proven ability to develop and implement successful data‑led video strategies, with experience in major production initiatives.

  • Experience in innovative storytelling solutions such as data journalism.

  • Advanced understanding of audience analytics, search optimisation, and platform performance.

  • Fluency in written and spoken Oromo and English, with ability to represent the BBC in senior forums.

    Desirable
  • Ability to shoot, script, and edit video stories using tools such as Final Cut Pro (FCPx) and QEdit.

  • Experience delivering polished, engaging, audience‑focused content optimised for digital platforms (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook)
