Job Description

BBC Media Action uses media and communications to reduce poverty in developing countries. To achieve this, the BBC Media Action partners with civil society, local media and governments to:

  • Produce creative programmes in multi-media formats, based on robust research,which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.
  • Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.
  • BBC Media Action delivers a portfolio of media projects in Ethiopia. It seeks to expand this portfolio of work, but also ensure that existing projects are delivered to time, to budget and to the highest standards, and in accordance with BBC editorial values as well as Media Action methodologies.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Technical Support

  • To lead the sound recording/editing team of studio engineers at BBC Media Action, Ethiopia
  • To coordinate all aspects of radio recording and editing with the relevant production teams, including scheduling equipment and studio needs across production activities
  • To record sound on BBC Media Action productions ensuring audio quality is first-rate and complies with BBC standards
  • To advise BBC Media Action colleagues as well as contributors, including actors and musicians, on aspects of performance relating to the sound balance
  • To advise production team and senior management members on additional hardware, software, or training needs of the staff required to meet the recording and audio quality expectations of the productions.
  • To provide technical advice for managers, planning and production staff, including surveying venues for outside broadcasts when required
  • To be responsible for the audio equipment necessary for any recording situation
  • To manage the sound studios and the studio equipment. Take responsibility for ensuring BBC technical equipment is in good working order and report problems at the first available opportunity
  • Take a leading role in capacity building and training of broadcast partners, ensuring high quality sound
  • To demonstrate an enthusiastic interest in the professional audio field with the ability to keep pace with new developments
  • Complying at all times with BBC Media Action’s Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Policy and ensuring that all freelancers and external suppliers are aware of their responsibilities under these policies.
  • Reporting any related concerns as soon as they become apparent
  • Ensuring that all recruitment is conducted according to BBC Media Action policies with a strong focus on safeguarding considerations across the entire recruitment cycle, including an assessment of the safeguarding risks associated with the role which is reflected in the assessment and interview process as appropriate, rigorous checks of professional references and inquiries made with relevant authorities.

    People Management

  • Line manages the Studio Engineers
  • Provides support and guidance on all studio
    activities
  • Ensure effective use of creative resources to deliver value for time and quality
  • Train and develop staff in line with the requirements, procedures as appropriate.

    Job Requirements

    Education and Experience

  • Technical diploma in the field of media/communications and/or a minimum 5 years’ experience of working in the broadcasting/recording industry
  • Be interested in sound recording in a variety of settings and a show an understanding of how to use sound imaginatively and to dramatic effect
  • Proven ability to use digital multi-track editing software
  • Fluency in both Amharic and English

  • Basic understanding of electrical circuitry. Ability to do simple repairs
