Overall Purpose of Job

  • BBC Media Action are undertaking a project in partnership with the Jobs Creation Commission Ethiopia in relation to the job creation, employment and health agenda for young people in Ethiopia.

  • BBC Media Action proposes a combination of qualitative and quantitative research to gain a better understanding of young people in the country, their aspirations, and the factors which may prevent them succeeding in employment, and living healthy, active lives.

  • Through a range of approaches and research techniques, we will assess the role of media and communication in their lives and their information needs, as well as the existing networks, influencers and stakeholders which may impact their decisions and roles in their communities.

  • The end product of the initiative will be the creation of a Social and Behaviour Change Communication strategy, which will guide the communication outputs of the Job Creation Commission’s activities in Ethiopia.

  • The Senior Research Officer will be accountable for undertaking all aspects of the research to contribute to this project and will play a significant role in the design and finalization of a Social and Behavior Change Communication strategy to be delivered to the Jobs Creation Commission.

    Main Duties

  • To be responsible for all research activities associated with the initiative including qualitative and quantitative research, ultimately playing a significant role in the design of the SBCC strategy to guide the Jobs Creation Commission’s strategy in Ethiopia
    Manage the project’s Research Officer and freelancers hired to support data collection
    Oversee and monitor the data collection process in all locations and be willing to travel for fieldwork where necessary and appropriate
    Write research designs, draft research instruments including questionnaires and discussion guides


  • Conducting, or commissioning, then analysing, qualitative and quantitative surveys, in-depth interviews with target groups and large-scale data sets

  • Ensuring that research is conducted to budget and within a set time frame

  • Producing both written and oral reports and presentations to project stakeholders and BBC Media Action colleagues

  • Explaining complex ideas and findings in a way that can be easily understood by the project team as well as stakeholders

  • Keeping up to date with developments in policy and social issues, as well as qualitative and quantitative research methods

  • Recruit and manage enumerators and data entry clerks

  • Work with the research team in London to produce high quality research outputs

  • Complying at all times with BBC Media Action’s Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Policy and ensuring that all freelancers and external suppliers are aware of their responsibilities under these policies.
  • Reporting any related concerns as soon as they become apparent.

    Job Requirements

    Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • University degree in Social Studies, Development or any other related field of study.

  • At least 3 years of experience in research and or in development with demonstrable experience in project implementation and management systems.

  • Demonstrable experience of conducting research with young people, preferably in the context
    of youth participation, employment, engagement and SRHR. Extensive knowledge and experience of youth engagement in communities across Ethiopia.

  • Demonstrable experience of social and behavior change communications (SBCC), and how communications can be used to tackle sensitive issues with target populations

  • Computer skills and familiarity with standard software packages such as SPSS.

  • Demonstrate administrative, problem-solving and decision-making abilities

  • Excellent communications skills

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and under pressure

  • Experience of designing and managing qualitative research in support of practical outcomes.

  • Strong qualitative data analysis skills

  • Experience of adapting methods to challenging and resource-constrained conditions

  • Strong report writing and presentation skills, communicating in non-technical language to a range of audiences such as media and development practitioners.

  • Excellent track record of delivering research findings on time, and to a high standard.

  • Ability to quality assure qualitative analysis and reporting.

  • Strong time-management skills

  • Strong commitment to, and understanding of, development issues in Ethiopia.

  • Fluency in oral and written English

    Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Ability to speak local languages in addition to Amharic is desirable
