Overall Purpose of Job

  • Research is the backbone of BBC Media Action’s work.

  • It is used both to inform media outputs and evaluate the effectiveness of our activities.

  • Research conducted by BBC Media Action includes both quantitative impact and reach surveys, as well as qualitative research throughout the project lifecycle.

  • The role of the Research Officer is to deliver these research activities to contribute to the effective delivery and success of BBC Media Action’s projects in Ethiopia.

  • Specifically, this role will be contributing to a research initiative focusing on youth engagement, participation and sexual reproductive health and rights. Experience in these areas is highly desirable.

    Main Duties

  • Working on a range of research projects and employing different research methodologies (both quantitative and qualitative)

  • Working closely with the project management and production teams locally, and with researchers based at headquarters, to ensure research continually informs our work

  • Developing and refining research instruments, such as questionnaires and discussion guides, and overseeing the piloting and implementation of these instruments

  • Assisting in the selection and commissioning of research agencies to undertake quantitative reach and impact surveys, in addition to qualitative research

  • Overseeing and monitoring data collection
    Processing and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data, and reporting in line with organizational and donor requirements

  • Conducting and overseeing the collection of qualitative data using methods including in- depth interviews and focus groups

  • Recruiting and training research freelancers and translators, as required.

  • Conducting pre-testing of media content among target audiences and ensuring that findings are incorporated into broadcast outputs

  • Explaining and presenting complex ideas and findings in a way that can be easily understood by a range of internal and external audiences

  • Complying at all times with BBC Media Action’s Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Policy and ensuring that all freelancers and external suppliers are aware of their responsibilities under these policies.
  • Reporting any related concerns as soon as they become apparent

  • Keeping up to date with developments in policy and social issues, as well as innovations in qualitative and quantitative research methods

  • Any other tasks which may be required as part of the role

    Job Requirements

    Required skills, knowledge and Experience

  • University degree in Social Studies, Development or any other related field of Study.

  • Experience in development and research work, with demonstrable experience in research implementation (mixed methods) and analysis

  • Experience conducting qualitative and quantitative research in Ethiopia

  • Familiarity with standard software packages, preferably including SPSS

  • Demonstrate administrative, problem-solving and decision-making abilities

  • Excellent communications and people skills

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision

  • High
    degree of personal organization

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Ability to work under pressure

  • Strong commitment to, and understanding of, development issues in Ethiopia.

  • Fluency in oral and written Amharic and English
