The Banda School is looking to appoint a Director of Sport to lead a large and thriving department.

The Banda wishes to appoint a Teacher of French who will teach throughout the school, from Years 2-8. The ability to coach some sport or contribute to the wider curriculum would be an advantage.

Due to growing numbers, a dynamic and enthusiastic teacher is required to teach Science up to and including 13+ Common Entrance and Scholarship. The ability to coach some sport or contribute to the wider curriculum would be an advantage.

The Banda, a technologically forward thinking school in Kenya, is seeking to recruit an experienced teacher to take the lead in Digital Learning and Computing throughout the school.

Job Definition:

  • The Director of Sport will be responsible for overseeing all Sport and Physical Education throughout the school. This will include the management of a large department of teachers and coaches and the post holder will be accountable to the Head.

    Tasks and responsibilities associated with the Post will include:

    Core Purpose of the Post

  • To have a clear strategy for the development of sporting excellence and to develop engagement in pupils.
  • To develop and encourage participation in sport competitions at all levels.
  • Taking responsibility for sports teams and extra-curricular sports activities each term. Matches might be scheduled after school hours or during the weekend and some sports activities may
    take place out of school hours.
  • Teaching Physical Education from Early Years to Year 8, as required.
  • Planning and delivering high quality lessons in line with the agreed scheme of work for the
    department.
  • Work proactively to develop positive home/school relations, responding swiftly and
    professionally to parental queries and concerns, involving the SLT when necessary.
  • Organising and confirming all sports fixtures.
  • Drawing up termly calendar fixtures and communicating these to the Head.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of pupil behaviour and kit.
  • With other members of the department, organising all Tournaments and Festivals (to include field preparation, parking, programmes, catering etc).
  • Attending termly inter-school meetings, fixtures meetings and Heads of Department meetings.
  • Emphasising the importance of safety and of safe methods of play at all times.
  • Teaching the pupils good sportsmanship and promoting the school’s Behaviour Policy. Pupils
    should be made aware of the published Sports Etiquette.
  • Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils and safeguarding their health and safety
    both on school premises and when engaged in school activities elsewhere.
  • Keeping up to date with curriculum developments and professional practice.
  • Attending regular INSET training and being prepared to share skills and knowledge with other
    members of staff.
  • Liaising with members of the department and other colleagues concerning curriculum,
    schemes of work, teaching methods, record keeping etc. to provide continuity and uniformity in
    the department.
  • Oversee departmental orders in line with the sports budget.
  • Ensure that the school’s sports equipment is organised, stored, maintained and replaced
    where appropriate.
  • Work with a sports kit supplier to ensure good standards of pupil and staff kit.
  • Working closely with estate management in the preparation and marking of fields, upkeep of
    swimming pool, astro and the hiring of sports facilities.
  • Co-ordinating the booking of the school sports facilities.

    Leadership and Staff Management

  • Organise and lead regular departmental meetings, the minutes of which should be kept and
    circulated.
  • Oversee, in liaison with the Head, the management, performance and recruitment of external
    coaches.
  • Administrator of SOCS software to input fixtures for website and calendar.
  • Responsible for updating health and safety guidelines/risk assessments.
  • Review and update all departmental documentation and handbook, as well as the Code of
    Practice for sport.
  • Ensure new teachers/coaches have appropriate induction.
  • Ensuring all games coaches are fully
    aware of their commitment and responsibility.
  • Liaising with the school nurse in the organisation of First Aid provision for matches.
  • Co-ordinating overseas tours when required.
  • Communicating with staff and with parents concerning pupils' progress and attending Parents’
    Meetings when required.
  • Co-ordinating before and after school sporting activities and coaching sessions.
  • With other members of the department, organising various Inter House events such as
    Swimming Galas, Cross Country, athletics events etc.
  • Liaising with the Director Co-Curricular and the Bursar on transport required for fixtures and
    events.
  • Liaising with sports coaches regarding times, rates and coaching days.
  • Writing a detailed report on each pupil at the end of designated terms and submitting schemes
    of work, planning and record keeping when required.
  • Performing duties, as requested by the Head, for supervising the pupils outside the classroom
    e.g. Lunch/break etc.
  • ‘Covering’ for any colleague who cannot attend school for any reason and providing a cover
    sheet for colleagues if unable to attend school.
  • Overseeing attractive sports displays on designated boards around the school when required.
  • To attend weekly Staff Meetings, INSETs, whole school meetings and any other meetings that
    may require attendance.
  • Maintaining high personal standards of appearance and behaviour and being punctual and
    confidential at all times.
  • Attending assemblies and school functions when required.

    Person Specification for Director of Sport

    The applicant needs to:

  • Possess a degree or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • Have experience of working in British Curriculum Schools.
  • Have experience in coaching major sports to a high level.
  • Possess a vision for the future of sport in a leading preparatory school.
  • Have the capacity to lead and inspire a team of coaches.
  • Possess a love of sport and coaching children of all abilities and passion for the
    development of sporting excellence.
  • Be able to build good relationships with parents and families.
  • Be able to build good relationships with colleagues.
  • Be able to create a stimulating and engaging learning environment.
  • Be able to use initiative, show flexibility and be adaptable.
  • Be pro-active, dynamic and a self-motivated member of The Banda School team.
  • Be punctual and use time appropriately.
  • Be a good communicator with adults and children.
  • Show good organisational skills.
  • Show a competent level of written English.
  • Be experienced in using ICT in teaching, as a tool for research and for communication.
    Familiarity with using an iPad in teaching is important.
  • Present a clean Certificate of Good Conduct or International Child Protection Certificate
    (ICPC)
  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of the pupils.
  • Keep up to date with educational developments and be committed to continual personal
    and professional development.
  • Be a motivator.
  • The post holder will have the responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the
    children and young persons for whom he / she is responsible, or with whom he / she comes
    into contact, and will be expected to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School’s
    Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy at all times.
