African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) is working towards more inclusive, Agriculture-driven prosperity for Africa.



AWARD invests in African women scientists, research institutions, and the agribusiness sector by supporting the development and upscaling of those agricultural innovations
with the potential to bridge the gender gap in African Agriculture.


Four initiatives form the core of AWARD’s work:


  • The AWARD Fellowship is a 2-year career development fellowship investing in science, leadership and mentoring skills for continent’s leading women agricultural scientists.
  • Gender Responsive Agricultural Research and Development (GRARD) supports African research
    institutions to enhance gender responsiveness within their research priorities and processes.
  • Gender in Agribusiness Investments for Africa (GAIA) supports AgTech innovators whose
    agribusinesses address the needs and priorities of a diversity of both men and women across the entire agricultural value chain.
  • AWARD Training builds the capacity of agricultural researchers and leaders and includes courses and workshops focused on building mentoring, leadership, and gender responsiveness skills.


    AWARD is hosted by World Agroforestry Centre, a member of the CGIAR that is headquartered on United Nations Avenue, Nairobi, Kenya.


    Duties and Responsibilities:


  • The Communications Officer will support the development and implementation of the communications strategy
  • Assist in overseeing AWARD’s internal and external communications activities and ensure that they support in building an informed focus on gender-responsive agricultural research in Africa
  • Lead the development of communication products and publications focused on AWARD’s strategy including writing, editing, illustrating, designing and formatting a stream of information materials such as regular news articles, feature blog articles, brochures and posters
  • Lead the production of high quality, brand-compliant, multimedia information products and visual assets
  • Maintain AWARD’s website and social media platforms
  • Work with the communications team to produce AWARD’s bi-monthly newsletter
  • Keep track of the online footprint and media mentions of AWARD and amplify these where appropriate
  • Assist in media engagement
  • Field and respond to general inquiries
  • Document AWARD events or events that AWARD participates in by taking photographs, and/or tweeting
  • Maintain an inventory of AWARD’s information, education and communication materials and communication assets/equipment
  • Assist in maintaining contracts for Communications Consultants
  • Upon request, participate in meetings organised on various topical themes to appropriately raise the visibility of AWARD’s initiatives
  • Generate, curate and disseminate evidence on the role and importance of gender-responsive agricultural research and development
    Essential Academic and Professional

    Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, public relations, communications, or related field, preferably in the development, science,
    agriculture or NGO sector
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in designing communications and knowledge management

    Skills and Competencies:

  • Fluency in English required; proficiency in French is an advantage
  • Superior writing and communication skills, with demonstrated experience in the application of professional editorial standards, journalistic news writing and corporate brand style
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities, work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Proven ability in publication and communication of different content to a variety of audiences
  • Strong self-starter with the initiative to identify opportunities and take appropriate action
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, InDesign and Web content management software such as WordPress
  • Have excellent planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Direct, demonstrated experience with and knowledge of:
  • social networking strategies, networks and tools
  • blogs
  • graphic design (Adobe suite)
  • General knowledge of the sub-Saharan African agricultural research and development systems is a plus
  • Displays the highest standards of personal integrity


    Terms of offer:
