About the Position

  • The Australian High Commission in Nairobi is recruiting new members to join our Political and Economic Section.
  • We are looking for people who can help us to strengthen Australia’s engagement across East Africa (Kenya, Somalia, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Tanzania).

  • Under limited direction, the Regional Political and Economic Manager is responsible for providing strategic advice, policy support and analysis on issues related to Australia’s engagement with Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Somalia. The position will be responsible for monitoring, reporting and advising on regional political, security and economic developments as they relate to Australia’s interests in East Africa.
  • Reporting to the First Secretary (Political), the Political and Economic Manager provides policy support and undertakes research and analysis on political, economic and thematic issues related to Australia’s engagement in East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Somalia and Burundi).
  • The position is at the LE6 level with a commencing monthly base salary of KES 301,450. The successful candidate will be expected to provide evidence of entitlement to work in Kenya by virtue of citizenship or relevant work permit.

    The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide high-level expert analysis, policy advice and strategic guidance to Australian High Commission (AHC) management on issues relevant to Australia’s engagement with Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Somalia.
  • Develop high quality written and analytical reports on topical developments and issues across East Africa.
  • Monitor, analyse and report on current affairs and relevant policy issues in East Africa, including local media coverage.
  • Establish, develop and maintain strategic working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including contacts in political, academic, think tank, journalism and social justice
    circles.
  • Provide strategic policy direction and establish priorities within the Political and Economic Section of the AHC.
  • Represent and promote the interests of Australia at a range of forums, events and meetings and provide advice on operational and policy issues.
  • Develop media releases, speeches, Opinion Editorials, and other high-level correspondence for AHC management, including the Australian High Commissioner.
  • Perform other duties and backup as required.

    Qualifications/Experience/Behaviours

  • Tertiary qualifications and/or a strong track record of experience in one or more of the following fields: journalism, political and economic affairs, international relations.
  • Superior written and analytical skills.
  • Proven organisational skills - ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritise effectively, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and flexibly in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise with high-level stakeholders, and develop and maintain a wide range of relevant contacts.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically.
