Job Description

  • A Researcher I (Clinical Epidemiologist) is a medical professional who works on studying disease and the way it spreads so that to explore evidence on improving clinical and patient oriented healthcare.

  • Clinical epidemiologists conduct research, as well as oversee public health research activities and train other researchers on clinical and epidemiological research.

  • She/he typically work in an office or laboratory setting, as well as out in the field research activities with clinical and public health research professionals.

  • Researcher I also prepare and present proper research procedures in case of a disease outbreak.

  • The Researcher I will be part of the knowledge management directorate team and s/he will develop research digest and policy briefs to strengthen evidence generation that enhance dissemination of scientific data and use of information for decision making.

    Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee research on various diseases or disease outbreaks

  • Compile research data for review

  • Develop procedures or policies related to disease control in a medical facility, community or school

  • Consult with healthcare facilities about disease control procedures

  • Develop educational resources to minimize disease issues

  • Work with public health departments to control disease related issues

  • Design, develop, and participate in studies while overseeing them as well

  • Interpret and analyze data gathered during research

  • Evaluate the results of medications and/or health care to better understand their safety or effectiveness

  • Work to locate sources of disease outbreaks

  • Develop evidence based procedures to enforce policies regarding disease control for hospitals, communities and schools, and provide support.

  • Lead the planning and implementation of clinical epidemiological studies

  • Oversee research protocols, scientific review of abstracts and manuscripts, generated by AHRI staff and students

  • Conduct research on disease outbreaks and case studies in order to determine and fine tune response protocol.

  • Develop the setup of the study by writing a specific plan outline, including the sample population, analytical measures and concepts used for data interpretation.

  • Provide onsite trainings and design capacity building activities to AHRI staff, students, FmoH staff and other elevant
    stakeholders on use of evidence for decision making and knowledge management.

  • With the knowledge management team, develop/ update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), guidelines, reports and other relevant documents; and ensure these documents are effectively used.

  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by supervisors

  • The candidate for the job is expected to have

  • Relevant experience in design and development of studies, gather and compile research data and document lessons learned.

  • Demonstrated excellent communication, advocacy, liaison and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate with various stakeholders: express concisely and clearly ideas and concepts in written and oral form.

  • Critical thinking skills and ability to work under minimum supervision Excellent proficiency in English (writing and speaking) Strong computer literacy (MS office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet use)

  • Excellent experience in scientific data analysis, interpretation and presentation
    Well-developed report writing skills,
  • Experience in writing policy briefs, scientific reports and in using other research output dissemination mechanisms for diverse audiences such as government and donors.

  • Proven experience in manual and guideline preparation.

    Basic understanding in health research ethics and in national and international laws related to health research

  • Well organized; flexible to working off-working hours or weekends as needed

    Job Requirements

    Education, Experience & Publication Point

  • MPH/MSc in Clinical Epidemiology and 6 years of experience and 7 publication points;
    OR

  • PhD in Clinical Epidemiology/Public Health and 4 years of experience and 6 publication points; OR

  • MD or DVM and 2 years of experience and 1 publication point; OR

  • MD with MPH/MSc or DVM with MPH/MSC
