The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with a regional office in Dakar, Senegal.

Our researchers are contributing to the body of evidence about the critical issues in population health and wellbeing impeding Africa’s development in order to provide strong direction and recommendations to policy- and decision-makers at all levels.

Our priority research areas are Human Development, Health and Well-Being, Data Science and Evaluation, and Population Dynamics and Urbanization in Africa.

In addition to the research component, APHRC has other programmatic areas in Research and Related Capacity Strengthening, Policy Engagement and Communications and International programs.

APHRC invites applications for Qualitative Field Interviewers in its NRF-School Nutrition Project, to be conducted in Nairobi and Kiambu counties between April to May 2023.

The main objective of the project is to identify school nutrition programs / interventions that are implemented in Urban and Peri Urban areas in Kenya, the challenges and facilitators in their implementation and potential solutions to the challenges experienced.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A first degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Anthropology, Social sciences or a closely related field

  • Fluent in English and Swahili, in both oral and written form

  • Have proven experience and skills in qualitative research work

  • Ability to facilitate interviews and group discussions in English and Swahili

  • Have experience in note taking during qualitative interviews

  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Have excellent computer skills and proficiency using smart phones and electronic gadgets

  • Be a resident in one of the study areas listed above

  • Experience in conducting school based
    surveys/interviews will be an added advantage.

    Job Description (Responsibilities):

  • Recruit/ mobilize eligible participants

  • Moderate/ facilitate qualitative interviews and stakeholder workshops with various people at national, subnational, community and school level

  • Take notes and compile comprehensive qualitative interview debriefing notes

  • Hold debrief discussions and exploration of ideas between the interviewers and the investigators

  • Prepare data collection progress updates and reports

  • Other related activities assigned by the supervisor and project manager.

    The Candidates Should Be:

  • Residents of one of the two study areas, namely Nairobi and Kiambu (area of residence should be clearly indicated in the CV or cover letter)

  • Be prepared to work full time on the project for the duration of data collection

  • Flexible and available to work odd hours (when necessary), under minimal supervision.
