Description of Job Task and Responsibilities:

The Safety Specialist shall assist the SSHO in administering the Safety and Health program. This qualified individual will coordinate all aspects of the Safety and Health program with all sub-annexes; develop, plan and conduct employee safety training; coordinate safety projects; assist in evaluating and coordinating safe practices and procedures; identify, investigate and appraise accidents and loss-product conditions and practices for the evaluation of the severity of the accident; and communicating accident and loss control information to management for measurement and evaluation of the effectiveness of the accident and loss control system.

They will also be expected to fill in for the SSHO in case of absence and administer all aspects of the Safety and Health program as primary point of contact for all safety-related matters.

Basic Job Qualifications: (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

The Safety Specialist shall maintain competency IAW EM385-1-1 requirements. Furthermore, the candidate must be a self-starter capable of working in a fast-paced multi-disciplined team environment with the ability to manage competing priorities to achieve team goals.

Proven management skills to include effective planning, organizing, directing, and controlling with strong decision-making capabilities.

Excellent analytical skills – data-driven, fact-based, root-cause-focused. Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills to lead a team to consensus. Understanding of litigation and claims processes and experience with legal communities.

Excellent communication skills – verbal, written, and listening. Ability to interact with staff at all levels from craft persons to senior executives. Knowledge base to successfully diagnose issues that cover multiple areas of interaction.

Job Specifications: Special Certifications or Training

  • Professional certification as an Associate Safety Professional (ASP) OR a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) is highly desired.

  • Candidate will be expected to complete training/certification in the following
    areas upon hire:

  • Lead 40 Hr. Abatement Supervisor
  • Asbestos 40 Hr. Contractor/Supervisor
  • OSHA Confined Space Entry
  • OSHA Respiratory Protection
  • Mishap Investigations (per OPNAVINST 5100.23, 5102.1 series)
  • OSHA 30-hour General Industry OR Construction Industry
  • NAVFACENGCOM Construction Safety and Health

    Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Engineering (any field), Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics, Fire Prevention, or other related scientific fields, based on a four-year course of study from a U.S. or U.K. accredited college or university.

  • Equivalent work experience in these fields may be substituted at the discretion of the KO. The quality and quantity of this experience will weigh heavily on this decision.

    Experience:

  • At least two years as a Safety Inspector, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, or experience gained by performing specialized work in a closely related professional occupation such as Industrial Engineer, Fire Prevention Engineer, and other engineering and scientific fields.
