Amnesty International Kenya Campaign Manager – Human Rights Education Jobs

Amnesty International is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning global movement of over three million people committed to campaigning and action to improve human rights standards enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution and International Law. Amnesty International Kenya exists for three primary goals namely to;


  • Undertake and publish investigative research and information to inform policy dialogue with duty-bearers;
  • Strengthen civic campaigning capacities to act for our values of national cohesion and constitutionalism;
  • Promote and protect constitutional values, the bill of rights and the rule of law in Kenya;
  • The Campaign Manager plays a strategic management role and manages a team of staff and financial resources dedicated to one of the campaigns being run under our organisational Strategic Framework. The office-holder shall work independently to plan and manage campaigns that make significant impact in the lives of persons at risk, allies and duty-bearers.
  • He or she will also play an active role within the Amnesty international campaigner community to shape international campaigns relevant for Kenya and the international human rights movement.

    Provide campaign leadership and build a large and inclusive national movement that has a significant impact on the protection and promotion of human rights in Kenya and internationally. Delivering an important part of the strategic Framework 2018-2020, this position shall manage mass based state and civic partnerships, online learning and civic engagement strategies to build a youthful human rights movement.

    Main Responsibilities

  • To design, manage and evaluate strategic campaigns and actions taken to deliver Amnesty International Kenya’s overall theory of change, program goals and results
    To provide thought-leadership in the specific campaign area being managed, initiate research ideas, inform mass and new media opportunities and spaces
    To lead movement-building programs that can attract considerable number of supporters and members, alliances and funding for human rights work in Kenya
    Manage the HRE team by ensuring overall team effectiveness, actively managing performance, team welfare, recruitment and onboarding, learning and development and liaising with the Admin team on administrative issues relating to the respective staff.
    Manage the HRE budget while ensuring cost effectiveness and alignment to project activities
    A change-maker with a passion and understanding of human rights, you will ensure all Amnesty campaigns and actions are underpinned by our theory of change by;

    Representing Amnesty and actively promoting the values and obligations contained in the constitution and international human rights standards and covenants;
    Leading in and participating in proactive and rapid response campaigns and actions
    Managing Amnesty resources towards significant impact with an eye for value for money, integrity and humility;
    Recruit, coach and significantly expand relationships with staff, volunteers and members that leaves them enlivened, active and empowered to act on human rights issues;
    Shape Amnesty’s research and public positioning in policy dialogues, public events, social and mass media engagement;
    Identify, nurture and expand collaboration with a core group of like-minded projects, institutions, duty-bearers, persons at risks, communities and human rights alliances, partners and other civic organisations;
    Support and drive online and off-line training and other empowerment tools, spaces and methodologies that supports the emergence of active, empowered and ethical circles of conscience nationally
    Engage and support other Amnesty initiatives nationally, regionally and globally in order to build comparative understanding and synergies across the Amnesty movement.

    Skills and Experience:

    Essential

  • Commitment to Amnesty’s organisational values and vision and Kenyan Constitution
    Familiarity with the rights-based approach, social justice, citizen empowerment and gender sensitive approaches;
  • At least 5 years relevant experience in managing staff advocacy, campaigns or other change management;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff and financial resources;
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze injustice and rights violations and to develop short and long-term strategies to achieve human rights impact and change;
  • Demonstrated experience of working with the development sector/ social movements/ community organizing to influence duty-bearers
  • Experience of influencing civic organisations, social movements leaders and mid-level government officials, policy makers and law enforcement officials.
  • Proven ability to develop strategies and plans and review/adapt them to fast changing political situations, exercising and promoting creative thinking;
  • Ability to contribute to organizational development
  • A confident communicator with good analytical, presentation and editorial digital skills;
  • Team leadership, outstanding social and intercultural skills and proven ability to multi task and work to deadlines, sometimes under pressure
  • Ability to operate and lead under pressure and in challenging situations; and take quick and firm decisions.

    Desirable

  • Experience of interviewing and dealing in an appropriate manner with witnesses and survivors of human rights violations especially in responding to education rights denial, neglect and mistreatment of young people both in and out of educational facilities.
  • Experience of independently designing and delivering impactful and fully integrated campaigns through the complete campaign lifecycle (issue identification, strategy development, campaign delivery, monitoring, campaign exit and impact assessment)
  • Demonstrated expertise or qualifications in public education, curriculum development, participatory adult learning, online and face to face empowerment learning approaches
  • Experience of leading several teams simultaneously and contributing to setting priorities, motivating oneself and others, and resolving team conflicts.
  • Demonstrated extensive and professional use of social media (Twitter, Facebook among others).
