Job Summary:

The Laboratory Assistant administers the collection, receiving, capturing and distribution of all specimens to ensure correct information is obtained and recorded and to facilitate the speedy processing of specimens in terms of service objectives.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receiving patients and registration of patient information onto the system and checks the type of specimen against the test required.

  • Carrying out Phlebotomy for different blood tests.

  • Guides patients on patient self-collected samples including among other; sputum, stool, HVS and urine

  • Receives, labels, and sorts of specimens for testing according to standard operating procedures.

  • Verifying suitability of specimen for processing and rejects unsuitable samples in accordance with set standard operating procedures.

  • Examining routine microscopic tests for disease diagnosis.

  • Creating shipping lists of samples for distribution to laboratories to ensure completeness of audit trail.

  • Administering the distribution of specimens to ensure the correct and prioritized channelling of specimens to the various disciplines.

  • Appropriate packaging, recording, monitoring, and of all outgoing referral specimens to ensure that specimens are received by designated laboratory, processed, and results returned in a timely.

  • Receipt and downloading of electronic referrals to correlate specimen received with information provided and follow up accordingly,
    to improve turnaround time.

  • Ensuring quality assurance and quality control for the laboratory environment guided by ISO 15189.

  • Ensuring safety for the laboratory environment guided by ISO 15190.

  • Monitoring, quantification, and requisitioning of stock for reagents and consumables.

  • Compilation and submission of periodic laboratory reports

  • Periodic review and implementation of SOPs

    Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Certificate in Medical Laboratory Techniques

  • Must be registered with the Allied Health Professional Council

  • A minimum of two years of experience in a similar position
