Aga Khan University Consultant, Early Childhood specialization East Africa Institute Jobs in Kenya

Introduction

  • Chartered in 1983, Aga Khan University (AKU) is a private, autonomous and self-governing international university, with 13 teaching sites in 6 countries over three continents (www.aku.edu).

  • An integral part of the Aga Khan Development Network (www.akdn.org), AKU provides higher education in several disciplines, carries out research pertinent to the countries and operates 7 hospitals (soon 8) and over 325 outreach clinics, all at international standards.

  • It has almost 2,500 students and 14,000 staff. The University is both a model of academic excellence and an agent of social change. As an international institution, AKU operates on the core principles of quality, relevance, impact and access.

  • Understanding and supporting the development of people in the day-to-day contexts in which they live and experience their multiple worlds are fundamental to any society’s hope of attaining a high quality of life and well-being for its citizens.

  • The Institute for Human Development is dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge with direct relevance for policies, programs, and practices that enhance life experiences at all stages of human development.

  • In its foundational years, the Institute seeks particularly to become a visible instrumental force, locally as well as globally, for advancing knowledge about the earliest years of children’s development and for harnessing such knowledge for the purpose of shaping policies and interventions that ensure a strong start in life for all children wherever they may live.

  • Early Childhood Development (ECD) has experienced significant advancement in recent years with its inclusion in the Sustainable Development Goals, the launch of the Nurturing Care Framework in 2018 and the momentum gained by global and regional ECD networks in advocating for the needs of the child.

  • However, progress in low and middle income countries has been slow, due in part to insufficient capacity and technical support for key stakeholders in governments, universities, implementing agencies, and communities.

  • The Institute, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Foundation, UNICEF and LEGO Foundation is implementing the Scaling Up Playful Parenting (SUPP) project in an effort to address capacity gaps in ECD. The project aims to enhance access to high quality parenting programmes and other ECD interventions targeting families of young children, in Eastern and Southern Africa.

  • The
key areas of focus for the project are ECD technical resource development, promoting access to technical resources, as well as capacity development through technical advisory, and trainings in the Science of Early Child Development (SECD), Care for Child Development (CCD), and others.

  • We are seeking a consultant to support the delivery of key activities of the project including facilitation of courses and parenting programs, leading ECD-focused technical advisory for government policy makers and various stakeholders, and developing ECD technical resources.

  • These activities will address the capacity and workforce development gaps faced in the ECD sector in the broader context of developing countries. The consultant will report to the Director.

    Responsibilities

  • Development of ECD technical resources as required.

  • Delivery of short courses and training programs that address identifiable skills gaps in the early childhood development sector across multiple countries.

  • Where necessary, work with AKU IHD clients to identify skills gaps and design training packages to address such gaps in clients’ organizations.

  • Report to IHD on the outcomes of the course participants’ experience, including evaluation of the course delivery, and learning and teaching experience.

    Requirements

  • A PhD in Early Childhood studies or related field or a Master’s degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience,

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 8 years of relevant experience will be considered
Local and international experience delivering early childhood courses including online programmes, particularly SECD and CCD.

  • Master trainer qualification is strongly preferred.

  • Experience in delivering parenting programmes.

  • Experience as a facilitator of professional development training to policymakers.

  • Thorough understanding of issues relating to the ECD sector across East and Southern Africa and developing country contexts.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
