The Faculty of Health Sciences in East Africa consists of the Medical College and the School of Nursing and Midwifery with future plans for allied health sciences.

The Medical College has 4-year Master of Medicine degrees in anaesthesia, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatrics, pathology, radiology, and 5-years for surgery.

Currently the University offers fellowship programmes in the following specialties: Cardiology, Infectious Diseases, Neonatology and Paediatric Neurology.

Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH, N) provides tertiary and secondary level healthcare services. Established in 1958 and currently a 300 bed facility, the Hospital was upgraded to a tertiary level teaching hospital in order to respond to the health care needs of the people of East Africa. AKUH, N is a premier provider of ambulatory care and quality in-patient services, including critical care.

The Aga Khan University, East Africa invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Reporting to the Dean, Medical College and the CEO, Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N), the Chair will provide academic and clinical leadership in the department through the development and implementation of departmental work plans consistent with the vision and mission of the University.

Responsibilities

  • Collate all necessary information for developing the strategic plans.

  • Academic and clinical liaison within and outside the university hospital.

  • Lead development, revision and delivery of training curricula.

  • Coordinate formal and informal assessment of trainees as the chief departmental internal examiner.

  • Assign responsibilities to faculty members in tandem with the departmental work
    plans and appraise them annually.

  • Represent the department in relevant institutional committees.

  • Represent the university or hospital as may be assigned by the supervisors.

  • Work closely with other clinical and academic departmental heads to ensure efficient delivery of services.

  • Maintain efficient teamwork approach in service delivery by professional and support staff.

  • Source for qualified human resources and be involved in the recruitment process for faculty.

  • Ensure capital and other resources required are adequate.

  • Draw the annual budgets for the department.

  • Approve annual budget plans and utilization of departmental funds.

  • Support departmental faculty in sourcing for research funding.

  • Ensure that the department maintains her research output in peer review journals.

  • Support the department to contribute to national health care services.

  • Lead in all clinical service delivery to ensure effective and efficient flow of services.

  • Work with different teams to oversee their operational activities.

  • Analyze and take decisions to resolve complex issues where policies and procedures may not be clearly defined.

  • Run specialist inpatient and outpatient services.

  • Consult with other faculty in the department.

  • Develop and continuously review departmental policies in regard to patient care.

  • Participate in the hospital’s accreditation processes.

    Requirements

  • Master of Medicine or an equivalent.
    Sub-specialty training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology

  • Registered or eligible for registration by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.

  • Be at least an Assistant Professor or equivalent

  • To lead teaching and undergraduate programs for the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department

  • Lead the team in a clinical environment
    Will have demonstrated leadership in an academic environment
